kinda OT. i work for IT and am thinking to leave (interviewing on our summer friday half days now). when i leave i intend to give 4-6week notice. but the last interview the guy who i talked to was like "you can't start sooner? you need to give 4 weeks?" i was like yeah. granted i don't like that company anyway but I intend to say that to all who interview me. frankly even though i lost faith in my current company on a decent raise or promotion, i want to leave on good terms, who knows i might even come back to consult. and because no one really knows what i do (not even my boss -- im an IT analyst who designed built and manage 3 of their financial planning systems) i'd liek to give more time than the standard 2 weeks. anybody had experience interviewing and asked when is the soonest you can start and you tell them something more than 2 weeks?

If you're paranoid like me you'd send it through an official means like USPS Registered Mail.

you need to write a formal letter explaining why you are leaving, what skills you have learned while working at the location you are leaving, and to give thanks for anything you need to.

Good luck with that. It's got to be, maybe not embarassing ... but, stressful.

Weird. A former company I worked for had a resignation form available as a corporate document.

You know, the fact they needed to take the time to create a form for that should have been a warning sign.

That's what I did... told my boss I'm outta there (not exactly those words), then handed in my formal resignation letter two days later.

Yours is a good way of doing it . . or watch the movie "Office Space" for an alternative method. ;)

Just type up a resignation letter and poop in a shoebox then hand it to your boss on the day you resign. :p

Tell the boss you have some good news, and bad news.

Tell him the bad first: you're quitting.

But tell him the good news is that you switched to Geico and saved a TON of money on your car insurance.

Show up to work wearing a LOTR outfit, and tell you boss that you are about to begin your quest for the ring.

call a whole-department (or whole-company if it's small) meeting. then get up front and start talking.

script:
<quiet> i've put this off for far too long. </quiet>
I regret to announce, this is the end. I'm going now, and I don't think that I shall return. In fact, I mean not to. I wish you all a very fond farewell. goodbye. <disappear>

Do it verbally, and back it up with the paper. Explain yourself, but don't feel quilty. If they needed to, they'd get rid of you quickly, and it is within your right to do the same. Just don't burn bridges.

I was on great terms with my manager and I just asked him if he wanted to do lunch because I wanted to speak with him. Well he pretty much guessed right away what it was about (I don't really know how) and we talked it out over lunch (as if we were buddies) and he accepted it just fine. The official letter I just handed in later. The biggest thing is just that they know you're leaving ahead of time so they can prepare. I actually gave 3 weeks notice and he was appreciative.

I second the earlier recommendation that you be prepared to be escorted from the premises that day or at any time after you hand in your resignation. It probably won't happen but it's best to be prepared just in case. Make sure you remove your personal stuff from your office/cubicle and your computer(s) before letting your managers know your intentions.

Dear Mr.Dumbass,

I have chosen to resign because you're a f*cking douchebag.
I'm sick of you sitting around with your thumb up your ass acting
like you don't need to do sh*t. Oh, and I got pictures of you f*cking
your secretary, I just sent them to your wife. Have fun sitting in a
gutter crying. D*ck face.

Sincerely,
Yo Momma biatch!

I slid it under my boss' office door and once she got in she called me to ask me why I was leaving. They tried getting me to stay but I said enough was enough. Corporate BS!

WTF?

It's from a Steve Martin routine about breaking up.

I figure resigning is like breaking up with your boss. :)
