I got called years ago. I explained that my functional role in the organization I worked for needed me more than the courts. That was all it took.

You are lucky you had a sympathetic judge. I was called for jury duty and witnessed an prospective juror tell the court that he ran a plowing business during the winter and had many contracts already paid for. His presence on a jury would be harmful to his plowing customers, he would lose their business and be in breach of contract etc.... The judge became visibly annoyed and told him that his private business did not excuse him from jury duty. I was pissed for the guy.

In cases like this wouldn't it just be easier to pay whatever fine the courts impose for skipping/ignoring the jury summons?

The penalty for contempt of court may also include jail time and whatever else the judge may impose. Community service too? Is contempt of court a felony?

the easiest way to get out of jury duty is just not to show up. no one has ever been charged for not showing up for jury duty

If he knew his was a seasonal business, he could have asked for a deferral and served in the summertime.

After finding out i would get paid, i went all in and got selected. Moderators, please shut this down.

I can see it now... the jury foreman passes a note off the the bailiff for the judge at some early point in the trial. It reads:

Dear Judge;

Can I be the one to inject the syringe?

Sincerely,
Dari

So, now that the trial is over, I can talk about it. It was about a sale of crack cocaine. But, after the cop took the stand, we took a lunch break. When we returned, the judge called us into the courtroom and told us the trial was over. He did not say why or what happened. Later, the court office said that even though he could not talk about what happened, he said what happened was extremely rare. But I want to know wtf happened. Any lawyers here care to chime in?

There was a police or prosecuter screw up and they could not proceed. Most likely improper evidence gathering /chain.

Yeah, something strange happened where the prosecutor asked the police officer to speculate about drug dealers. That got an immediate response from the judge and defense lawyer. The defense lawyer asked for a mistrial but the judge ignored him. It was strange. After that the judge appeared to be upset at the prosecutor.

The only other possibility is that a key witness changed or refused to testify.

The only witnesses were the police officers and someone from the lab. Only one testified today, and only for the prosecutor before the case was abruptly closed.

Sure sounds like a prosecutor screw up. The police are not going to be happy.
