I'm still alive!

All she did was comment on how much I had really lost, that was it. She rubbed the stubble a bit, then had to run out on an errand. I'll pick up some oil later :)

I've been slowly (or quickly) losing my hair, since the beginning of January. No idea why it started then, but it got to the point where there was a large patch on my crown gone, and smaller patches along the sides of my head, along with smaller dime sized bits here and there. Not normal hairloss, but not something I could really prevent either. Got to the point where I just looked silly, with long curly hair except in very visible spots. Even when it was all afro'd up you could tell it was very thin, and people were commenting a lot on it.

So I said screw it, and took the trimmer to it this morning. I think I look halfway decent, and I'll fit in fine at work with the rest of the head shavers. I told my wife I was going to do it at some point, just not today. Think she'll be surprised/pissed when she comes home and finds me bald? My 9-month old keeps looking at me weird, and is afraid to touch my head now (she likes hitting people's heads when they get too close).

i only read your original post. the way you describe it, you have Alopecia Areata. it's a hair disease. go have your doctor (dermatologist preferred) check it out. anyone wanna put $100 i'm right, i'm game.

it's not life threatening or anything...you just lose hair. chance of it spreading to the rest of the body is VERY low. i have a form of alopecia right now (i'm 19)...i'm coping with it but i have a bad case. your wife might get pissed at first cause you shaved your head but tell her it might be Alopecia, too. do a google search (or google image search) and see if it looks familiar.

grow your hair out to like at least half a cm so a dermatologist can at least see the patches

I'd go see a doctor if all that happened within 3 months:

"Patchy baldness. Also referred to as alopecia areata. Alopecia means baldness and areata means occurring in patches.

This process typically begins with patchy hair loss on the scalp and sometimes progresses to complete baldness and even loss of body hair. The hair loss tends to be rather rapid and asymmetrical and is different than male pattern baldness.

Alopecia areata affects both males and females. It tends to occur most often in children and young adults but older individuals can also be affected.

The most common pattern of alopecia areata is one or more spots of hair loss on the scalp. There is also a form of more generalized thinning. When all of the scalp hair is lost, it is referred to as alopecia totalis. Loss of all of the hairs on the body is called alopecia universalis.

The cause appears to involve an autoimmune mechanism. The body's own immune system attacks the hair follicles and disrupts normal hair formation. Biopsies of affected skin show lymphocytes (one of the body's immune system cells) inside of hair follicles where lymphocytes normally are not present. What causes this is unknown.

Alopecia areata is sometimes associated with other conditions (allergic disorders, thyroid disease, vitiligo, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis). Some cases occur within family members and indicate a genetic basis. "

The husband would love that... not having to deal with hair stuff anymore... a lot quicker too.
Do you this she will be pissed?
(I just hope you have a nice shaped head :D )

I don't think she will be, like I said, this is something that was going to happen one way or another. I'd just rather not look totally stupid with my hair thinning, and lots of guys around here sport the bald look so it's not like I'll be the only one.

I think i'll be lucky, and not get my dad's skullet (though I've finally convinced him to keep it trimmed), though i do think i'll end up with a big forehead... :p Told the wife I'd shave it if I started balding, she commented that I'd look like a pumnpkin on a stick (I have a large head)..

I think your wife will be fine with it though... especially if you were going the way of The Donald... :p
