Went to college at 18, but didn't move me and all my stuff out of the house and out of the state until I graduated and was 22.

16.

I came to the U.S. as an exchange student :) My parents welcomed an American student to study in my city, staying in our house, and I stayed in an American family's house for 1 year. Then I skipped Junior year of High School in the U.S., so after 1 year of exchange in here, I got into college at 17. So yeah, that's about it. I still have a room at my parent's house, and actually a floor on the new one, but since I am working fulltime now, I won't be able to visit them that often. I guess in a few years when I go back home to continue you my father's business, then I can use one of the rooms whenever I visit them.

2) Those who got kicked out 20 years ago the day they turned 18 and are still bitching about how hard it was back in the day and how easy these kids have it nowadays.

There are a few exceptions, but those will be the anomolies.

I lived at home till 2 weeks before I turned 22,
I bought my Own House.

I paid room and board, after I turned 18,
not a Lot of money, $25 a week, but it was not "Free" living at home.

I turned 18 in 1976, Minimum wage was $2.30

I lived at home until I was 24. Then I got married and moved out. I paid rent from the day I turned 17.

Heh, to me, that's not cool. I guess its just culture. Parents would never let their kids pay anything for rent in Turkey. The longer the kids stay with the family, the happier parents would be. As I said, it must be culture cause even though I have been living in the U.S. for 6+ years now, when I get married, whether that be here in the U.S., Turkey, Italy or anywhere else, I wouldn't accept a dime from my kids for staying in my house :)

My father was disabled and my parents had NO money. I was trying to help out by paying enough to cover my portion of the utilities and food.

That I can understand, I am talking about families where both parents work, earn enough money for everything, sometimes more, but still ask their kid to pay rent, etc... in Turkey if the kid is staying with his parents, and is working, he'll contribute to the family budget, but nobody will ask for it specifically..

It's most likely cultural. Americans consider themselves an "independent" people, and part of that is paying your own way. Some parents feel this will help their kids be responsible or teach them the value of a dollar. Conversely, some children want to assert their independence by paying their own way. Sort of like saying "I'm an adult now, I don't need you to support me anymore."

as great as living alone seems like it'll be, rent/utility on my apartment without a roommate will be rough (doable, but rough... no more going out with friends, eating out, etc)

I guess if that happens we'll be seeing more of you on ATOT ;)

nah. my world of warcraft subscription is probably the last thing I'd give up and the #1 reason why my posts per day have decreased dramatically in the past few months :D

hopefully giving up my AC will save me a bunch of money on utilities. since I'll be living alone, I can just walk around naked and not have to worry about having the air conditioner running all the time :p

I'm also considering cancelling my DSL/landline and leaching off my landlord's open wifi network (seems fitting considering how much crap I've had to put up with while living here. hehe)
