how old were you when you moved out of your parents house?

I was just thinking about it today... I know a lot of guys who still live with their parents despite having graduated college and making fairly good money.

it's weird. of the 12 people who work in my department at work (all males, all above the age of 22), there are only 4 of us who live on our own / with a non-related roommate.

I more-or-less moved out at 17 when I went away to college, but I moved back in for a year and a half after graduating college but before finding a "real" job... I moved out again when I was 22 and have been living on my own (well... with a roommate) for the past 2 years. when my roommate moves out in May, it'll actually be the first time ever that I'll be living by myself

I'm weighing the possibility of moving back in with my parents for a couple months, though... as great as living alone seems like it'll be, rent/utility on my apartment without a roommate will be rough (doable, but rough... no more going out with friends, eating out, etc). and there's not much point in finding a new place in this area right now since there's a 99.9% probability that I'll be transfering to a new office at the other end of the state when it opens up in August.

The status of ATOT'ers can be broken up into two groups. They are as follows:

1) Still living at home with mom and dad, bitching about how their environment.
2) Those who got kicked out 20 years ago the day they turned 18 and are still bitching about how hard it was back in the day and how easy these kids have it nowadays.

There are a few exceptions, but those will be the anomolies.

I'm graduating from college in a couple weeks and will pretty much be on my own then. I have basically been on my own for three years when I got my apartment and just go home a couple times a semester for a weekend or whatever.

It's almost the very defintion of loser.

You're the second LIFER in the thread to mention this. So I should just move out and post on a message board all day? then I wouldn't be 'a loser?'

Still in college, will be moving back from my apartment to home with the parents next week. Have one more year of college left, got a raise at my job and will be working mostly afternoons and weekends this summer to get the 8% shift premium, which puts me at around 16.50 an hour, which means I'll be able save enough to get myself a new used car by the end of the summer(will spend 5000 on the car no more) which should leave me a couple thousand left in the bank.....then move back into an apartment in the fall with my younger sister, then once I graduate I'll move back in for a couple months with the parents til I get enough to drop a down payment on a small house....then I'm good to go....so if all goes to plan be on my own at 22.

You've got it all figured out.

But I'm very adamant about this topic and my standing on it. There is only one reason why you would live with your folks past high school or college. You can't provide for yourself and prefer to suck off the teet longer than you should.

I moved out when I was 18. Bought a car. Got an apartment and went to school while working.

Don't forget this depends a lot on cultural backgrounds too. Living at home after graduating is a lot more common in Asian countries.

I agree--looks like I share your spidey-sense!

In any case, stop being a bum and move out. Posting on ATOT does not make you a loser. Maybe not the BEST use of my time, but I can check the threads from work and at home--see, I have a J-O-B and pay MY BILLS. Posting does not make me a loser, especially when I'm providing for my wife and 5 kids. I have a mortgage, 2 car payments, etc. I've been on my own since 19, except for a couple of months when I was 20 and moved back in with my mom. But again, I moved out.

I don't think you were told to move out and post all day. You should move out, handle your business, and if you CHOOSE to post at ATOT, welcome!

And you're probably living in debt, too.

so if I couldn't provide for myself and lived at home that is cool? Instead, I decided to to spend one year at home as I am moving out soon. I've got a new car that when I move out will only have two years of payments until it is paid off. I have no college loans. Maxed out my Roth IRA for 2005 and 2006. Jump started my 401(k) and have considerable savings and money in the stock market. I don't know how this can be considered a loser. Instead, I could have been living on my own and had none of that.

Define debt...

Yes, I have a mortgage. Total of $6-7k in credit cards, and 2 car payments on 2004 vehicles. Am I buried in debt? Nope. I'm 34, been married for almost 11 years (~ 1 month shy) and am no more in debt than the avg person. Living at home is just sad when you start hitting early- to mid-20s.

Define early 20s? Is it sad that I'm moving back home with my parents for this summer and part of next? I certainly dont think so considering it means I'll be able to move straight into a small house with the next 18 months or so
