How often do you workout in the winter?

Normally i workout 3x a week when it's not freezing cold, but the past month or so, only been able to hit the gym 2x a week for an hour.

I try to mix up my routine, but it does get boring, having to wait on line to use something doesn't help and it's even worse when fatties leave a wet spot on the bench when they get up and don't wipe it up.

I was looking at home gym's, what i have seen take up too much space lke Bowflex.

4-5 times per week still. If you're out and about, it's easiest just to go to the gym than go home. That way there's less chance of you getting warm and cozy and not wanting to go outside again.

I don't know about you, but my gym has heat. Also, less busy during the winter.

Same with Brikis, 3 on 1 off...walked to the gym today in shorts (and a parka) as it was deadlift day. Probably mid-20's today here in Michigan.

How cold can it possibly be for you to not want to make the 100-yd walk from car->gym?

South Carolina, FTW. Rarely too cold to not be able to wear shorts, going from the car to the gym.

6 days, I do something, more cardio than weights else I become one of the fatties so derided in O.T.

I'm looking to get a home gym instead of driving 45 mins back and forth to the gym and have to deal with these annoying people.

Someone on craigslist is selling there Total Gym XLS, will check it out.

I normally workout in my unheated detached garage. Last winter I tried it for a while – winter coat, hat, gloves and all. Then I wizened up and walked a mile to a local gym.

This winter I’ve been working out with dumbbells inside. Probably is good for my muscles to have a change with dumbbells. But it’s taking some adjusting to. For example benching dumbbells on the floor – getting into and out of position is limiting what I press more than my ability to actually do the bench. And I can’t blast music and get as into it as I can in the garage – my girls are usually going to sleep just above me. And there is something more satisfying about moving a heavy barbell than moving two lighter dumbbells. I do plan to workout in the garage if/when it is say 40 degrees or more.

Anyway – I slacked some during the holidays, but knock on wood am back to about 3 times a week like I try to be during other months.

The same as I do any other time of year. Do you also complain about it being too hot to go to the gym?

Having lived in Phoenix and gone to Crossfit Southwest, I'm pretty sure I've had the biggest swing in workout temperatures. 115F in Tempe to 20F here in Michigan. :p

Certainly makes things interesting. ;)

There's a suggested scale defined by exercise physiologists... I can't remember the name of it, but it states that:

Temperature (in F) + Humidity (%) = Useful number

If said useful number is above 150, you run a very high risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Either wait till it cools down or find a water workout. I can't imagine working out in 120F. I thought this scale would be useful to mention to those who live in areas where it actually is too hot to workout sometimes.

Yeah, we/they program around the heat as summer months tend to focus on slower heavier-weight WODs as opposed to running/high-metcon WODs.

And regarding that scale...I absolutely love Bikram yoga and won't be stopping any time soon. ;)

Well, you aren't exactly doing high level aerobics in a Bikram yoga class. Still, there are people who can't handle it.

Same as any other time of the year. Sports on any day I can and weight lifting 2x/week if it's a < 60 hour work week. I usually take 2 days off every week (Wednesday and Sunday though sometimes it's Sat & Sun).

My weight training is always 3-4x a week. If I'm dieting my off days always consist of some sort of cardio though, even if it's only brisk walking for 30-45 minutes.

From xmas I (finally) got cold weather gear, so I'm running outside. Tuesday was my first run in the cold of any significance and happened to be about the worst case scenario.

Live in Ohio and we got hit Tuesday with snow all day which meant that all the roads had 1-2 (or more) inches of snow. Add in some wind, snow falling still, and missing my turn from my planned route (was a new one from mapmyrun.com) that ended up making it about 25 min longer run than planned. After the first ~1 mile or so I was perfectly fine. The only issue was the snow on the roads and traction issues until about the time the run should have ended and I realized that I took a wrong turn AND my phone had died so I couldn't call the gf to come pick me up. The last 25 min was cold and rough because of it. No biggie though, I'm running again tonight.

4 - 5 days a week. If your training at home you just need a couple of dumbells and a bench, there is loads of stuff you can do with them as well as bodyweight stuff. From my experience the big home gyms with all the cables and rubbish, are a waste of money
