My Operating Systems CS instructor back in college said that any real file system should never have to be defragged. But I use windows xp so I can play my games, and I defrag about once a year or when I remember....thanks for the reminder, just kicked it off.

Never, but then the Linux filesystem is designed not to produce a noticeable amount of fragmentation.

ah, but linux is an operating system, NOT a filesystem. Filesystems for Linux have a variety of pros and cons. Speciffically, which one are you refering to?

I did it once a month till a certain flurry of activity that left me with < 1 GB HD space and XP wouldn't let me defrag anymore.

I don't know of any Linux filesystem that has any significant issue with fragmentation. I'm partial to ext3 myself.
