How not to ship a hard drive.

i would't just straight send it back like that though. There is a chance that it was lucky enough not to break on its first route, but it could break on the way back if shipped like that again. That's just a waste of hardware. I would at least repackage it, maybe put a bigger box around it or something

Yes, it MAY work, but it could develop some bad sectors, or develop some machanical issue, not worth the risk at the buyers expense, all becuase the buyer shipped improperly.

best advice is to ship something like you'd want to recieve it (although I am guilty of a bad packing job when shipping a motherboard rma)

Although I'm pretty sure it'd work, I wouldn't go ahead and use it if I thought it may be damaged. I think you should return it, but I'd still bet it works fine.

So do we get to know who the moron was? 😛

Is the drive in static wrap at least? heh.. guess you'll never know unless you open it.

Return the sucker.

The probability of that disk drive being in a not nominal state is actually quite high. That package probably sustained more shock than this, and that speaks for itself. Granted, disks in operation are far more susceptible to shock...

ha
i got a cell phone like that once that i sent in for a new one and they sent it like that
i was so amazed that they were so welfare like that
i called them up and raised hell
they sent me a new one overnight and it was pack so tight and in a huge box full of packing peanuts
i laughed my ass off

Looks like it'll work fine. Only the bottom looks a little messed up.

The envelope is not made out of very sensitive read and write heads sitting a few microns from fragile glass platters, though.
Mine are metal.

The same thing happened to me. I got a hard drive shipped to me in a cardboard envelope and of course it didn't work. Then the seller ignored all my attempts to contact him. Fortunately it was under warranty so I just RMA'd it.

That motherfvcker. You should hunt him down and saw off his legs.

I'd like that name as well. Can you say "blackball"?

Was this a new trader or someone who was somewhat established?

Might not be such a good idea to publicly announce his name, at least not until you've worked out the details or if he is trying to weasel out of returning your money.

But I (as well as others I'm sure) would like to see how this works out for you.

Hell yeah! Spill the beans, Minendo! I understand all that privacy and disclosure crap...but anyone this stupid NEEDS to be publically exposed so NOBODY else has to repeat your bad experience. THanks. 😉

This could be the traders first major screwup, the real question now is how will he followup with this mistake, posting their name could end up giving negative results as far him being willing to return the money.

/thinks "he has a point"
/then says:

BUT, how frickin' STUPID do you have to be to make such a basic mistake, man? That's like, one of the first things I ever learned about computer parts! "Hard drives shatter like glass if you sneeze at them...simply looking at them voids the warranty."

I handle HDs gentler than I'd handle a newborn infant...there's money to be lost, you know!
