How not to ship a hard drive.

i would't just straight send it back like that though. There is a chance that it was lucky enough not to break on its first route, but it could break on the way back if shipped like that again. That's just a waste of hardware. I would at least repackage it, maybe put a bigger box around it or something

Yes, it MAY work, but it could develop some bad sectors, or develop some machanical issue, not worth the risk at the buyers expense, all becuase the buyer shipped improperly.

best advice is to ship something like you'd want to recieve it (although I am guilty of a bad packing job when shipping a motherboard rma)

Although I'm pretty sure it'd work, I wouldn't go ahead and use it if I thought it may be damaged. I think you should return it, but I'd still bet it works fine.

The probability of that disk drive being in a not nominal state is actually quite high. That package probably sustained more shock than this, and that speaks for itself. Granted, disks in operation are far more susceptible to shock...
