Never tip less than two bucks, even on an $8 pie. To the guy you?re tipping, an $8 order is about the same amount of work as a more average sized $20 order, so less than a $2 tip, just because you didn?t order much, doesn?t feel particularly ?fair? for the work, the gasoline, and the car itself.
Exactly. Whether you ordered a medium plain, which is like 8 bucks, or 4 larges, some soda, and breadsticks, around 35-40, I still have to do basically the same amount of work. It's not like in a sit-down place where if I only order coffee and dessert, you only have to come up to me two or three times, vs. a whole meal with five people, which is more work.
My worst experience was with a regular customer who was a notoriously bad tipper. He usually tipped less than a dollar, as I drove up to his >$300,000 house, with nice cars sitting in the garage. This one particular time, the total was something like $14.25; he hands me a 20, and says to keep the change. I say thank you, and turn around to walk away. He then motions with his hand like he's clinking coins together in his fist, and says, "I meant the change..." I say, oh, sorry, and give him his change back.
