Looking back, I can't believe he took it. So cruel :D

I probably wouldn't have taken that. One guy I work with took a big jar of silver change one night from some drunk dude. He took it to the bank the next day, and it ended up being over a $100 tip for him! I might not have even accepted that, but he did, because he was experienced in the art of collecting weeks worth of pocket change at a time, and he could see that there was a lot more than enough to cover the $17 pizza.

At most places where drivers have to use their own cars, the drivers get extra pay either based on mileage, or per deliver to compensate them for using their own vehicles.

I delivered pizzas for 2 years. About half the people didn't tip at all. For the other half, it usually averaged 2-3 dollars for an average delivery. I did get a 20 dollar tip on christmas eve once.

Half that people didn't tip at all???

Where did you work? Where I work, maybe 1 out of 20-25 people don't tip. If half the people didn't tip, I would have quit within a month or two. Tips + mileage, which in my case, is paid to me in cash nightly (18 cents per mile, avg. 75-100 miles per night), is approximately 2/3 of my income from that job.
Actually, I guess it was probably more like 1/3 didn't tip.
Little Caesars.
About half the area was nice neighborhoods and the other half was white trash crappy apartments. Although the nice neighborhoods really didn't tip any better than the crappy ones.

I tip based on how the service was. If it takes forever, or the guy is rude, I won't tip anything. If it's on time and the guy seems polite and friendly, I tip 2 or 3 dollars.

At Papa Johns, you aren't compensated by the mile. Mileage means nothing.
