When upside-down-ternet was 1st posted, I wanted to do this. But I didn't have a WRT54G or similar router to allow for this. Captive portal sounds like an easy way to do something similar.

Oh, I know. Route them to a spyware laden website.

I like this option the best. The gift that keeps on giving. :)

about this... not trying to be a smart ass, but as I said my wireless USB adapter connects to whatever unsecured wireless network it feels like and there's nothing I can do about it, if he set this up and I got infected because my system automatically connected to his network without me knowing couldn't he be held liable for damages to my system?

right now I'm connected to my neighbors network who's a stupid idiot who refuses to set up WEP, I told him and he basically said "I don't want encryption and I don't want you connecting to my network either" my system seems to like his for some reason, the signal is even weaker than the other network I use but whatever.

Out of curiousity, how would one do this?

Although I really like the idea of redirecting to Goatse, unfortunately you may want to consider where you live. If there are any kiddies that live in or frequent the area, you may want to drop the idea. However, redirecting to a rickroll or something as annoying as the hampsterdance or something would probably do the trick. Good luck!

umm, connecting to a network you do not have explicit permission to do so is a FEDERAL crime.

The operator of this PRIVATE network can do what they want with their PRIVATE NETWORK. The very act of somebody connecting to this PRIVATE NETWORK means the operator of this PRIVATE NETWORK should prosecute under federal law and rule the intruder by ACCESSING A PRIVATE NETWORK THEY DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO USE.

OP - have at it, PM me if you want to have some fun. it's your PRIVATE NETWORK, have some fun with them.

Yes, he CAN do whatever he wants, but that doesn't mean that he SHOULD. A little bit of COMMON SENSE and/or tact in these situations goes a long way. Chances are he may KNOW these people personally. It isn't unheard of for people to connect wirelessly to another network by mistake, especially children. Federal crime or no, I don't think the OP would like to have to explain to little johnny's mother why a certain image has been burned into his retinas. Federal law won't help you not look like an arsehole in these situations, nor will it help you any unless you are willing to fork over the time and money to go through the courts. Again, some discretion should be used when considering these types of situations.

That being said, if this type of situation isn't the case and there have been repeated attempts by neighbors to get "free" internet despite having been warned, I'd say go to town.

Why should I spend money? I turn my PC on, and HIS wireless network is interfering with my shit, it's his problem not mine.

HIS WIRELESS is within the law...your PC has probably falling out of spec. Your fault not his.
