Another FWIW: I tighten my oil filters as tight as I reasonably can with ONE hand, that way I can easily get them off with TWO gloved hands when I got to change it.

"Honda" oil? From the dealer?

I don't think I want to know how much that cost D:

about $6/qt, i think honda 0w-20 are synthetic, no? cheaper than mobil1 but still expensive. bought a new plastic oil pan from autozone at lunch time so i can pour it right back in after changing the filter.

i also hate the idea of hammering on the filter and damaging the spout/stem/whatever that it screws onto.

It's pretty rugged - I've punched a screwdriver through a filter and tried to twist it off that way (ended up using Channellocks to get it off). I do believe that was the last time I had a shop change my oil.

Some cars have check valves, my G has one so if I take the filter off only a certain amount of oil comes out.

I know snap-on makes great stuff, but $50 for what looks like a strip of nylon? Really? o_O

That strip of nylon as you say is quite tough... I have a 24" long 1/2" drive ratchet by Snapon that I have used with this to take off filters that were a full 6" in diameter and even crushed in the sides of them... The oldest one of the pair I have is about 15 years old and have cleaned it with brake clean a hot water type pressure washer and its still comes out looking like new and have never even come close to hurting it... Worth every penny...

snap-on nylon better than your nylon, don't you know?

He wears nylon...?o_O:eek::biggrin:

If you dont like the price of the strap wrench then you really dont want to ask how much the long handle 1/2" drive ratchet cost...

Uh no its your responsibility to do routine maint. and that can be you or a shop... Most just do it to save $$$ like me as I use 10qts of Royal Purple 15-40wt and would hate to see what a lube shop would charge for just the oil... So understand the OP`s idea`s and the strap wrench is kinda pushing his budget but its also an investment...

I tried that once. It tore up the filter casing but still wouldn't come off. Almost had to have it towed to a mechanic but finally got that fucker off of there.

I would recommend this only as a last resort.

WTF is it with dealers that they put it on so damm tight!, I also had a lot of trouble getting mine off and then the drain bolt was insane, I actually had to put the car on jack stands (for clearance) and use a frigging breaker bar to get it loose, it had to be torqued to over 100 ft/lbs..

Oil is in the oil pan. Unless your filter is bellow the oil pan somehow the only oil that is going to come out is what is in the filter and the tiny bit that settles in the passage to the filter.

$20 is for the actual strap, the other $30 is for the 'Snap-on' name... I agree, stupid!

Also for the Snap-On truck to drive by your place of work on a regular basis to hand you the free lifetime replacement.

Napa sells a metal one that locks onto the filter with a ratcheting motion. They sell a few different sizes. It's like $20, and isn't a nylon strap

Lately it seems like I’m putting a lot of hours in with little results - Hence the lack of update.
I finally got the floor pans on both sides all fixed up last week. Also fixed the left side A-pillar / hood hinge section that was rusty (opposite side of what I did in post #66 - it was much easier to do it this time knowing exactly what to do!)
This week I started working on disassembling the rear brakes and suspension since I am expecting a rather large order from twosrus . com next week.
In the meantime I am also doing a few random repairs and fixes on the car.
Took out the distribution cap and am expecting a reseal kit in next week.
Buyanoring.jpg

Took out the old bulky air filter assembly and fabricated my own piece to attach a new cone to the AFM. (Apparently a Nissan 240/280 would have this exact piece I need, but I called a few guys parting out 240/280's and they all wanted an arm and leg for this part, so I said, "screw it, Im pretty sure I can make one." So I did - and not to badly if I may say so myself!)

Here is a pic of how rusted over the rear left brake assembly was
IMAG0387.jpg

The back of the rotor was worn pretty badly because the piston was pushing on it - I am replacing both back callipers. I also have Goodridge stainless steel brake lines, rotors, pads and new bushings coming in sometime here.
IMAG0390.jpg

Tomorrow I’m dropping the oil pan and resealing it with factory recommended Permatex. Also am going to replace all the lines to teh oil cooler with stainless braided lines and new washers from Toyota.

Yesterday I attempted to remove the old oil filter -shiiiiiiit! Im pretty sure Hercules was the idiot who put this thing on.
IMAG0404.jpg

I first tried using a belt wrench thinger majing to get it off, didn’t budge but twisted the housing. I then jammed a screwdriver straight thru and tried turning it, but it just tore the thing - didn’t budge. Doing this caused the filter to rip off its base, which was a good thing because I was then able to get a screwdriver into a hole just inside the lip and hammer on it (with a hammer) and it eventually started to twist off. Holy mother of… I was cursing pretty hard at this thing and danced a jig once it was off.

As for the reason I had to quit working today - a picture speaks a thousand words

Sorry about the shit quality photos. I dont own a camera so my phone is all I got. and today i accidently smeared some oil over the lens... thats why they look washed out.
lol, oh the first oil filter change... from my thread...

Also, RIGHTY TIGHTY, LEFTY LOOSY

Yup been there.

Good luck OP!

This is what I use almost everyday and has never failed me... Worth its weight in gold... (BTW have 2 of them just in case)...:D

Good god, why the hell would you spend $100 dollars for 2 nylon strapso_O.

I just use a rubber strapped jar opener. It can be a little big for some situations and I'd prefer a better 'locking' mechanism, but once you get it on there it's not going to slip much. Plus it cost maybe 10 bucks, and has yet to fail me.

K&N makes motorcycle oil filters with nuts on the bottom so you can use a wrench or socket. Makes life much easier. I would assume they make some similar filters for cars too, but I always get the cheap ones for my explorer.

And a counter-example, when I took my bike in for the valve adjustment, they changed the oil/oil filter too, and a week later the filter started leaking and I had to tighten it.

Good luck, I've never had any with those type of wrenches, only lots of slipping.

well crap, amazon has lots of good reviews, the harder you turn the harder it bites...guess i will see. there is no room for a strap wrench for sure, and my channel lock is not side enough...
