I don't know how much house you can get for $220,000 around here. I'm trying another zip code in this area at the moment. I can't find any that expensive yet.

Here's a decent looking older home in a nicer part of town:
$25,000 2000 sq ft, 3 bedrooms, 2bath, fireplace...

If you want to get a "fixer-upper", here's one out in the country.
A couple acres with it, but definitely a fixer-upper.
$100 5 bedrooms, 2634 sq ft, 2.1 acre, good school district
The $100 is probably an error. I'd guess closer to $20,000

Moving up the ladder in price:
45,900
3BR 1bath, newer house (1982) 1.18 acres

Hmmm. Unless you're one of the pretentious people living on the local lake - a relatively small reservoir where none of the houses have room for an actual leach bed for their septic systems because they're so close together, and construction is a matter of one-upmanship - there's really not much around here in that price range.

I should convince my work to let me telecommunte... but my wife will not let me go there since she wants to be near shopping :(

If you made a similar amount of money, she'd be able to do much more shopping online than she's able to do in stores. :)

I searched realtor.com and I typed in 5 zip codes in the area (Cupertino, San Jose, Saratoga, Sunnyvale) with no avail for $225,000. I'm guessing you might get a hit if you double that price, but even then you'd be really lucky to find something. I say tripling the price is what I expect to pay when I'm going to look for a house in the Bay Area.

It's not so much how much the house costs, in metro CA cities it's the value of the raw land that is expensive.

220k would buy you a nice porsche with money to spare for motel rooms.

You can't drive a house but you can live in your car

I'm just saying people think CA homes are expensive but it's the land that is inflating the price. For a typical $210k house in the midwest it's $10k for the lot and $200k in construction whereas in CA it's the same $200k for construction (or a little more) and $500k for the lot.

$229K in Dimondhead, MS

I just got back from getting pre-approved for a home loan. At $860/mo, my rent is out of hand. I can't imagine some of the loans that people are taking out. I make about $42K/yr, which isn't bad for around here, and I wouldn't be comfortable if I couldn't put 25% of my net income into savings per month.

I'm looking at a $95K house, which I know is going to get me flamed here on the forums, but I can't stand the idea of throwing away $860/mo in rent. Now I just have to worry about flood insurance.

She can walk to all the Amish places that sell quilts and stuff. :) Much more scenic than inside a mall.

That's right, and that is why the location of a house is so important because you cant drive it around, the area you live in determines the education quality for your kids, where you hang out, and to a certain extent, your social group. The ability to get to work in 10 mins is a lot better than an hour each way. A good location provide a ton of conveniences and amenities.

Location, location location. It is the most important factor that determine prices in Real Estate. Of course, as with any good things, it comes at a price. It just depends on your situation.

If you are young and single, and a yuppie, a high rise apartment in downtown overlooking the entire city will get you laid, easily. If you are raising a family, you might wanna move out to the 'burbs where the school district is good, and where there are plenty of spaces in the backyard.

When you say your $860 rent is "out of hand", what sort of increases have you been seeing over the past few years?

Nothing in the Boston area except condos. Towards the outer suburbs there are some pretty small houses (2br/2b, <1500sq ft) available

You are telling me you live in a hamlet with less people than my subdivision?

2000 census puts my town at just shy of 5000 people, 2007 estimate was closer to 6K
i live like 45 min from Dr Pizza, town where he lives is smaller

In 2002 my rent at a similar apartment in a larger city was $550. In 2005, according to the guy who used to live below me, the rent here was $500.

Thanks!

I thought that the AT housing mantra was that any house worth less than $1M was "OMG teh crap house!11!One". I figure that any property here will be worth quite a bit more in 10 years, so I can move up to a nicer place.
