The house in Iowa is awesome. I believe that's basically West Des Moines which means it's close to a huge new mall and shopping center. I'm actually moving to downtown Des Moines (possible high rise) this summer when I start my new job there. It's amazing what some people around this country pay for how little they get.

Where I live you can't get a 1BR condo for $220k. Maybe a 600sq' one in a mediocre area.

$220,000 goes a long way around me... This major market downturn has really made it a buyers market around here.

http://www.ryland.com/find-you...n/15477-arlington.html

2482 sq. ft.
4 Bedroom
3 Bath
3 Car Garage

The site is incorrect as to location however, its actually in Parrish, FL (just north of Sarasota, just south of Tampa)

Hah! And if you buy that Oakland house and move in you can soon be another pin on that "Oakland Murder Locations" map.

The realtor in that article understates it a little. "This location is not one that everyone is rushing out to live in."

You can get a 3 bed, 1 bath 1300 sq ft house in pretty good condition on my block for about that.

My parents sent me a link for Spartanburg SC, where for my houses' value I'd get 4 bed, 3 bath, 2000 sq ft, swimming pool, big lot, modern everything. I just keep telling myself that I pay a premium so that I can live in this city, and that quality of life doesn't have anything to do with the size of your house. But then I start thinking about that swimming pool...

You can get a WHOLE lotta house for $220k around here. An average 4/2 10yr old home 2000sq ft usually goes for around the $130k range. For that price I would say you could get a 5/3 4000sq ft without a problem.

Where do you live?

his profile says South Dakota

5th largest "city" with a population of 20k

That's why I like Raleigh. You can get a nice house for a good price and you don't have to live in Boonieville USA. Not that living in Boonieville USA is necessarily bad, but there aren't many IT jobs in Boonieville, I looked.

The Triangle area doesn't seem to be a bad place to live. I'm considering it as one of the places I might live after graduation.

Housing prices in CA are f'n ridiculous, at least things are coming back to reality, though agonizingly slow. I like how half of those properties listed were reduced in price, the current median price is about 10% lower though, 197K I think.

That house in NC looked pretty nice

20k? that barely qualifies as a town :)

LOL 20K is over 3x the size of the town i live in

You are telling me you live in a hamlet with less people than my subdivision?

im looking for a house at about 200-240k right now, and in tempe that is sometimes difficult. the farther south you go the higher the prices, despite the houses being about the same quality/ size as other areas for 180ish. i looked at a nice 4br 2ba at about 1900 sq ft for 230k and drove a mile south to see a 4br 3 ba 2400 sq ft for 1.2mil. tempe is fairly overpriced, but its a good place. and its close to both my kids schools and my work.

I bought my L studio co-op (650 sqft) in Jan of 06 for $115k - can probably get $120k-125k for it now - 220k can get me a decent 2 BR co-op in my building. I am exactly 30 minutes away from Manhattan (5 minute walk to a - free ferry ride (staten island ferry) that runs on peak hours every 15 minutes - most times every 30 minutes and the middle of the night once an hour - runs 24 hours and is always free).

That being said - when me and my current gf get married (1.5 yrs) we will likely move to Arizona, Texas or California - where each of those (but the latter) we will be able to buy a house cash from our savings.

Rest of the time will be spent with my legs up on the sofa.

:)

I don't know how much house you can get for $220,000 around here. I'm trying another zip code in this area at the moment. I can't find any that expensive yet.

Here's a decent looking older home in a nicer part of town:
$25,000 2000 sq ft, 3 bedrooms, 2bath, fireplace...

If you want to get a "fixer-upper", here's one out in the country.
A couple acres with it, but definitely a fixer-upper.
$100 5 bedrooms, 2634 sq ft, 2.1 acre, good school district
The $100 is probably an error. I'd guess closer to $20,000

Moving up the ladder in price:
45,900
3BR 1bath, newer house (1982) 1.18 acres

Hmmm. Unless you're one of the pretentious people living on the local lake - a relatively small reservoir where none of the houses have room for an actual leach bed for their septic systems because they're so close together, and construction is a matter of one-upmanship - there's really not much around here in that price range.

I should convince my work to let me telecommunte... but my wife will not let me go there since she wants to be near shopping :(
