zero. Tipping for a haircut is insane.

I've gone to the same guy for 14 years. He wouldn't take a tip anyway.

I always tip when getting a haircut, I guess just a little incentive for them not to make you look like a doosh. My guess is the guys who don't tip there barbers don't tip waiters either. Got to tip the waiter so they don't spit in your food or leave you a little present in there :)

not to start the tipping thread war again but.

playing devil's advocate here...

Why should I leave a tip after I payed 15 bucks a plate for food? Wouldnt the price of the food cover me sitting and eating there? Why is it my job to pay the waiter when I am paying for the food?

educate me.

I'm not disagreeing with your argument at all. I would just rather leave an extra few bucks for a tip so I don't get a special surpise in my next meal there.

Same, I usually tip ~20 percent but i dont feel that i should.

odd, I don't tip for a haircut... I go to my neighbor who has a little salon in her basement and give her ten bucks and that's that.

None, my mom used to work in a Hair Sallon, she cuts my hair. I've got no complaints, the one time I did go to Schroeders, they cut my hair unevenly and my mom had to fix it. :)

"TIP CREDIT

An employer may credit a certain amount of the tips received by tipped employees (e.g., waiters and waitresses) against the employer's minimum wage obligation when certain conditions are met. The law now sets the employer's cash wage obligation at not less than $2.13 an hour. This replaces the former provision requiring that tipped employees be paid at least 50 percent of the minimum wage in cash. However, if an employee's tips combined with the employer's cash wage of $2.13 an hour do not equal the minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference."

$2.13 an hour for a paycheck. That's $85.20 a week. That won't even cover the rent much less the bills.

You pay the restaurant for the plate of food and the sitting and eating. You tip the waiter/waitress for busting her ass all night to make sure that's the best damn meal you ever ate. Providing excellent service, being pleasant and attentive, and making sure that 10 tables full of customers don't have to wait around all night for a refill or to order desert or whatever takes a lot of work. We all know what it's like to have poor service, and when you do get good service, you should reward it, so next time they serve you, it will again be good service.

If there were no tips and the restaurant had to pay the staff what they are worth, the restaurant would charge you at least 20% more for the food anyhow.
