Well, just hope arnold in his prime wasn't a part of that 100. I read somewhere that this was his bench routine:
445 x 8, 365 x 24, 245 x 60

I think someone got that out of his autobiography or something... Crap, if I could bench ONE-forty-five 60 times I would be happy lol. It's crazy to think that arnold could bench my max 60 times on his last set....

EDIT: oh yeah, real average dude off the street, I'd say 125. That's what I was when I started lifting.

i say 185-thats pretty basic for a normal guy

Definitely not.

When I first started lifting after at least a year of very little exercise, I could do a couple of sets at 135. Maybe 150 max.
After weight lifting 2-3 times a week for a couple of months, I was up to 3 sets of 8 at 185. I could max at about 225.

Isn't it true that if you can do a single push-up of yourself (slightly inverted, of course), you can at least do your own weight in a bench press ?

No.
EDIT: I'll let the Physics experts explain, but I can easily do 10 push ups and there's no way I can bench my own weight right now.

Hell no. When you're doing pushups, your feet is stabalizing some of the weight.

I just got a home gym (see other thread of mine) and was able to do 120lbs without hurting myself. If I went to do a max, I could probably get in the 170lb range.

I think I'm 'bout average.

:pWho needs vasoline, its all about the friction. And Id say between 100-125. I WISH the thing about pushups was true, then I could bench around 215.

Yeah, if you can do them standing on your hands...

I'm not sure...how much does your girlfriend weigh? j/k ;)

Seriously, back in college when I started weight-training, I started at around 125-135 lbs (3 sets of about 8 reps). Most other guys who also hadn't done any previous training started at about that weight too. Some who were more athletic started higher, others lower.

If you were to grab a random sample of guys from where I work now (white-collar job), I'd be shocked if a lot of them could start at 110 lbs.

When I started really to try and get into shape in HS I started doing reps at 95 and my arms were wet noodles back then. So I'd say the average guy could probably do around 115-120 if not more.

A male should be able to bench press their own weight.

I don't know how many times but I'm thinking like 5.

I would guess that the average guy could do 20-30 lbs under his body weight. (his ideal body weight, not his OMG I'm so fat body weight) So that's about 140 maybe?

i'd say about 110-125...when I started right at my senior year of high school I had trouble getting 95 8 times on my first set...

I wasn't too scrawny either...just had never lifted before...all my friends started out around there too but some of them were very very skinny.

I can do 60+ pushups without stopping but I can only bench my weight 12-15 times, so I would say that that is false.
