How much can you bench?

My shoulders became much wider in my early 20s. Not muscular, but the bone structure changed. This is normal. It was such a change that the Army shirts and jackets I was issued just a couple years before fit me like I got them as a little boy.

I haven't really gotten much wider since then...I still have a pretty small bone structure even for my height.

That's why pundits like Red Dawn claim I must be lying with all the things I say, despite my weight and my build I still don't look that big, because the muscle is packed onto a small frame. If I'm clothed I'm just not gonna look as strong as I am. Some of my friends don't believe me till they see me do it in the gym, either.

No doubt you filled out with a bit of muscle, too. But you have to realize a person is still growing and filling out in their late teens and early 20s.

My chest certainly filled out, but my shoulders aren't really wider. They are, however, the most noticable difference between the two pictures, seeing as in shoulder press(dumbell) I went from 25lbsx10 to 60lbsx10.

OK that is definately a marked improvement. If you are at 158 now you probably do look pretty ripped. You were pretty skinny so you probably would have gained a lot of that weight but by weight training instead of flab you were able to gain muscle. Good job. I take back calling you a skinny runt.

Most people weight train just to get in better shape, not to work on their "beach muscles". In fact most would be happy just to look good with their clothes on.

I take it your memory is failing you, because I seem to recall you saying you had plateued. Thus my previous statement was correct.
I've plateued on the flat bench or to be more precise, become satisfied. Instead of concentrating on that exercise I now work harder on Flyes and Incline when it comes to chest exercises. It's also not so much about the amount of weight you lift as it is the results. I don't really feel like bulking up to get bigger just to have to bust my ass to get cut after I achieve that size. To me it just isn't worth it.

That's one thing I will grant your youth, you probably have an easier time gaining muscle without the extra weight than us who are over 35 do. Now the trick is for you to keep that physique for the next 30 years or so.

Around 340 before I quit last year due to too many recurring deltoid injuries. Just wasn't worth it in the long run, don't want to be in a wheelchair by age 40!

I'm referring to people that flat out SAY that. Around this time of year I see alot of people in the gym that aren't normally there, and they straight say 'im tryin to get big for spring break' or 'for the beach this summer', etc.

Yes, that is the challenge. Being that all of my muscle is built and not innate, I lose it pretty quickly if I stop lifting. At this age, when I stop, I just 'deflate' a little, but I'm sure when I get older it won't work that way. All the more reason to keep at it!

You still train don't you? I remember you saying that you used to eat a ton. Have you cut back on your calorie intake much?

I used to drink 4 protein shakes a day, 2 milk and 2 water. Also used to spike insulin, bracket meals, slow protein intake before bed, creatine, the whole shebang. I've cut it back to one in the morning, that's it. I don't train much anymore, only do cardio and pushups. I think part of the reason was that I want to be fit with a full range of motion for when and if I get into Phys Therapy school... you can't work with patients if you can't touch the back of your shoulder! ;)

I don't even want to say, it's embarrassing :(

5'10", 172lbs (used to be around 180 and lost 10-12lbs flying out to remote offices doing some work out there)

Ah, well it's nice to see I'm not the only guy who works out here. Funny thing is, I'm getting cut right now in winter, and I plan to start bulking up again soon. I'm not really the 'beach muscles' type, more like the 'get huge' type.

This is most assuredly the most difficult part as you age and your metabolism becomes that of a sedentary middle ager. Us older guys have to do hours upon hours of cardio a week just to keep up with the younger crowd with their naturally higher metabolisms.

Whereas we used to be able to just bust it in the gym lifting weights and look great, the time now has to be divided between lifting and cardio just to maintain a decent physique.

Of course we are so much smarter and more mature it is just about worth it ;)

NFW 8% of the people here bench 300+. Shens.

Anyway, personally my one-rep max with a barbell, doing a proper rep, is about 265 at the moment. I did 260 once last year and it was the first one-rep I'd done in at least five years. I am concentrating properly again now on raising my strength!

When I was 18 I was 5'2", 105 lbs and could bench 140.
Could also squat 595. That was the last time I got an official score, 8 years ago.

Now I am 5'3" and weigh 188. I seriously doubt I could do any weights without injury.

It's like anything else athletic... managing to complete a marathon, or throwing the shot x distance... it's an achievement. Oh and it's fun.

Doboji, I can respect that. I guess I'd just rather go out and play a sport instead of pumping iron... it's a bit boring to me.

Red Dawn, Perhaps you missed my tone. It just seems to me when people ask the question "How much can you bench?" they're trying to be tough and say "My wang is bigger than yours"

how many reps. If just once I can do about 280 is the highest i've tried.

Normally during a workout I do 30 reps of 170.
