There aren't TOO MANY manual transmissions in the USA that I haven't driven at least once or twice.

 This.

Although the last truck I owned (Volvo 770) was an automatic.

Currently I have an automatic, but I drove my previous car for 6 years and it was a 5-speed manual.

I really love a stick, but I don't know if I will be able to get another one anytime soon.

Wasn't there an article last year saying that only about 10% of car sales in North America were standards? We have a major over-representation here;).

Mine was a 1990 Eclipse Turbo but my younger brother had to drive it home for me. :(

Now if we have a choice, my wife and I always pick the manual. We actually cross some cars off our lists if there is no manual option.

First time I really learned manual, I drove a manual car (1985 Mercedes 280SL) all the way across the country. Before then I had trouble starting when completely stopped, afterward, everything is like second nature.

I know how and my WRX is a manual, I refused to get an auto. Sadly I was pretty bad at driving stick when I bought it so my mom had to drive it home. Damn tricky car to learn manual on too.

I tried to test drive a WRX earlier today and kept stalling it in 1st. I think I was letting off the clutch too quickly, kept jerking and stalling out. The dealer guy drove it, hah. How long did it take you to learn?

I sold cars, and you'd be surprised at how many men cannot drive stick, so quit acting like all men just know how to drive stick. I can outdrive most men I know. In reality, everyone should learn to drive stick, just because you never know when you'll need to. It's really not that hard, but wow....some people really are awful at it.

It was on the tree so I assume a 6, I was wide eyed 15 year old at the time.

No poll wtf?

My cars are manual. Saab 92-X Aero & Subaru Forester S. I like being a part of the car and in most control of what it does.

Auto is nice in traffic though.

Yeah the clutch kind of engages oddly, and there's a certain point where you have to hold it for a few seconds before you can fully release it. Mostly due to having very low amounts of torque at those engine speeds so you have to help it get rolling first. If you try it again remember it engages pretty high, I generally visualize it as engaging right about when the clutch pedal is lined up with the brake pedal, just a bit more and its fully engaged.

I can still have trouble driving real smoothly in it(gear spacing sucks) especially when cold, but it took me a few weeks to where I was comfortable driving it to work. I took my time learning on it, especially since driving to work would require starting on some respectable hills. Now though there's no such apprehension, I rev-match, heel-toe, etc often on a daily basis. I really enjoy it and will have a hard time not buying another manual car.

That would obviously be new car sells. Doesn't seem like too many here have a brand new car.

After learning to drive my moms van, from age 16-24 (25 next month) all I've owned/driven is manual trans.

My daily driver is a 5 speed manual. My wife can drive it also (although she won't if there is traffic).

A manual is bane and useless unless it's on a sports car. People with manuals in their Honda Civics or Mazda 6s are just pointlessly being snobs about it thinking their car is some kind of sports car "ohh i need to feel the road" stfu please.
