HAM's been around since the '50s I'm pretty sure.

I am saying it was controlled in Taiwan if I remember correctly. You couldn't even have walkie talkie.

Remember I was in Taiwan, so I was already lagging behind in terms of electronics. Throw in martial law on top.

Sure you could - just don't transmit. ;)

Tubes are fun anyhow. The purple glow really turns me on!

I was born in the 80's and I still know what those are. Of course, I do have a record player set up now. :) I luckily inherited my mother's solid vinyl collection.

We had tubes, but they were being phased out. Transistors (and the first ICs) were the norm.

I think the only civilian that had radio comm was the fishing vessels. Owning a HAM set was illegal.

LOL speaking of radio...

This thread is like the airwaves. The old timers have SSB rigs and the n00bs just have AM. So all this talk about old stuff sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher to them!

I, unfortunately, still remember them. We were luck to have them though or you were hosed.

Luxman was another name that made me drool. We used to operate a discomobile powered by a McIntosh lamp amp with some Eliminator Two speakers.

Holy crap! Those were the speakers. Gotta save this pic. So many memories from 75-76.^_^

We used to hotknife hash and listen to frank Zappa, lying on the carpeted floor with our heads INSiDE the speaker. The bass would rattle your brain.

Good thing you did because the highs from those piezoelectric motorola tweeters (as pictured above) would've fried your brain! :p

Of course those didn't exist back in the '70s. Another reason why I miss the '70s.

Haha, I had one of those too I think.

I had one of these. I used to listen to the story books at the wrong speed.

A rudimentary horn can be made out of packaging cardboard and a sharp toothpick attached to it will produce sound audible across the room.

I'm talking childhood years here. ;)
I have a book of do-it-at-home science experiments that includes this. If I remember correctly, it suggests a wooden pencil and card stock.
