40hr work week and marriage - I still game every day for at least an hour or two. AND I appreciate the technological aspects ;)

My list of eagerly awaited games has grown to at least 11

Why? PS2/Cube/Xbox suck compared to PC... I would much rather be stuck with my clear/beautiful/high rez PC gaming, than crappy aliased TV images and shallow gaming.

i just gave up TV instead . . . planty of time for computer games.

i DO enjoy gaming . . . we are in a "lull" right now with very few good new games out . . . i even went back and played some "classics" i missed - including System Shock2
- and the graphics DO matter [to me] . . . i was annoyed by the original '99 Dark Engine but did enjoy the game [SS2's ideas have been ripped-off by most succeding games] although i hated the clunky interface [IMO, it has been surpassed by DeuSex and other newer games].

As to having the latest HW it just isn't necessary if you don't mind gaming at 10x7. ;)

. . . i still enjoy gaming - just NOT a lot of the [inferior] CRAP [and buggy] GAMES that have been recently released.

OTOH, i really don't enjoy posting on the Forums [as much] anymore. ;)

I use to build computers for the hardware. Quad 19" monitors with TV tuner, FM tuner, Dolby Digital 5.1, SCSI HDD, Gaming graphics, blah blah blah.

Once it was all said & done I realized that it was an impressive machine, however I don't utilize the hardware enough to justify building a system that way ever again.

Now I build PCs as my needs require. I dont benchmark and I only play CS.

I have lost some desire to play CS, however this is all dependant upon the other players in the game. I really enjoy the game when I'm playing against inteligent players who can function as a coheirent team. I really hate the players that are not there for the game (hackers, afk, kids, etc.).

Sorry for the spelling :p

I still buy hardware for the purpose of playing games. Graphics can certainly enhance games considerably but they won't make or break a game for me. I play older games with inferior graphics all the time.

A lot of modern games have been nothing really special though, just graphically impressive. Good games for the most part, but not the kind of things I would keep going back to, except maybe SCCT. UT2007 will hopefully change this.

Low framerates in FPS games (minimums below 60) really irritate me and reduce the fun factor, but I can always turn down the graphics options.

SS2 and Deus Ex are some of my favorites games of all time. We need more FPS games in this style, and with a properly designed graphics engine too (which the more recent DXIW lacked).

Most guys like to have "projects" to work on their spare time - whether it be computers, cars, model airplanes (one of my favorites), home improvement, boats, etc. It gives your personal life some direction, and something to spend your $$$ on.

No idea what this thread is about... BF2 has rekindled my love of PC gaming. On strategy gaming Act of War has been amusing me, but I'm really excited about "Supreme Commander" from the guy that brought us Total annihalation a few years back... it's sort of a continuation of TA, without actually breaking copyright laws. The Gamespot article showed an incredibly dynamic game with a robust story line. Personally I have zero interest in the cartoonish Warcraft type strategy games. Although I do like the humorous side of Red Alert 2

DE-IW is a great game in its own right - it suffers with comparisons to the original [which -imo - should not be made as it is SO different] . . . and check out the Fan-made alterations to DEIW and Thief-DS that change the interface and make it much more "acceptable" to to [purist] fans of the originals. ;)

i'd LOVE to see SS2 remade . . . or at least a follow-up.

I agree with keys on this one, like to game an hour a day or so to blow off steam. Overspent my quota on hl2 and farcry. Looking forward to fear and new hl2 episodes. Have been trying to get into splinter cell chaos theory - but so many moves - am just starting to get the hang of it. New hardware is nice also.

Yeah, I agree. It has some shortcomings compared to the original but also retained many of the good things and was even better in a few ways. I think it would still have been an excellent game, better than 90% of the FPS games these days, if it wasn't for the terribly performing graphics engine. It's so sluggish that it really affects the fun factor. (even with a OC'd 6800 GT, 800x600, no AA/AF and with the lighting and shadow settings turned down, it still struggles in some areas and doesn't look that good)

I was going to get Thief DS too but decided not to after I saw how bad this engine was (they run off the same engine I think). I will probably get it whenever I next buy a new video card.

Where can I get this interface mod though?

I certainly do not play as many games as I used to.

However, it is mostly the distributors fault. Not all games will run under 64-bit Windows, and although dual-booting is an option, I don't want to be stuck with lots of games that will require special love&care five years down the road. So I still haven't looked at (or bought) the latest Splinter Cell, because thanks to planetamd64.com, I know the thing won't run. Some installers will even refuse any OS newer than 32-bit WinXP. (so you have to mess with the .msi file...)

Not to mention that having juggled my share of diskettes in the old days, I'm not too eager to buy games that comes on multiple CDs. Someone should tell the distributors that DVDs are neat. (yet another thing to check prior to buying a game :()

A week ago a buddy and I went shopping and noticed Doom3 on sale. I've briefly observed D3 on my friend's rig, but haven't really played it yet. So I bought the thing, despite being sick of "shoot-all-the-mutants" games (best FPS? "Strike force"! Realism rules). Today I finally realised that I left the game at his place. A week ago... :)

Finally, there's the old-school factor. In the old days, you had companies like Sierra Online (Leisure Suit Larry and Space Quest), Lucas Arts (Zak McCracken and Day of the Tentacle) and Bullfrog (Syndicate and Populous) churning out quality titles. Today the shelves are packed with zombie-shooters and half-porn titles, but only a handful adventure games remain (mostly non-humorous and invariably stuck on the bottom shelf). And possibly one or two flight simulators. (I still have Falcon 4 on my shelf next to me -- its manual was immense and a must-read unless you stuck to arcade-mode only -- Falcon 3.0 required a 386 IIRC, now that was some seriously expensive hardware at the time! :))

So yeah, I can certainly relate to your observation. Gaming today is all about hardware and graphics. Content and playability is way down on the list. It is strange that it costs so much money to create the games we see today -- you'd think all that money would ensure some content and playability as well.

I still game, just not nearly so much as I did in '94... it's kind of wearing thin on me as I get older. :) I still LIKE to game it's just that I feel gaming is getting too stale, it seems like one FPS after the other. I find myself straying towards games like Psychonauts, the Splinter Cell series... games like Worms or the odd puzzle game. That's testament to the fact that there is variety on the PC but they get lost in the shuffle next to HL2 or whatever. (I like FPS btw, I finished Far Cry and HL2, so I'm not a hater, just need a break from them) :p

I'm finding more and more that I enjoy the "lego" side of gaming more than the actual gaming itself. It's a lot of fun to pick and choose your parts (hardware), put them together and then load everything up, sitting back to take a look at your masterpiece.

The game itself is more like icing on the cake, or a benchmark to test my work.

Dude...that's exactly how I feel, I need to shake your hands

Can we start a club or something????

:)

Where do I sign up? :p The building aspect is much more enjoyable for me as well, maybe its because all single player games now are boring, cant keep my attention for more than an hour. Last SP I truly liked was Resident Evil. MPs like MOH and ET though are still fun (also love WWII history), objectives and teamwork is more fun than just running around shooting sh!t up.

Thief DS runs MUCH [much] much better than DE:IW and the fans have created patches to make it run even better and even look like the original [non platform] games . . .

Start with the Forums at Through the Looking Glass

there are detailed instructions for System Shock/Thief and DE Series games

I'm less interested in gaming than I used to be, but I'm certainly not so bad off that I don't like it all anymore. I go for quality and not quantity these days.

That being said, Serious Sam 2 comes out next month. I've been waiting for that game for a long time, I'm definitely going to be buying a copy on the day it hits the shelves.

Truthfully cheating has just ruined gaming. Especially for first person shooters.

I agree, although I certainly enjoy to play games, too. BF2 is pretty sweet.
