For me, hardware is a means to an end. I only upgrade when the games I want to play demand it. Right now, I can play everything I want to play on my 3 year old system. That may change when Civ IV, HOMM V, AOE III, and (especially) Oblivion are released.

havent heard that term in a while

its a good one

im still into gaming, though the technology does distract me at times, i still manage to focus on what im playing, while going oooo that effect is cool! wonder how they can do that!

and ill spend ages messing round with settings so that i get the IQ and the FPS i want.

That's exactly why I'm still using my 3-4 year old System, but I'm upgrading this weekend to be ready for the new stuff coming up.

I occasionally have a little slow-down on Far Cry, but it runs smooth most of the time (Medium settings).

The only other game I have any issue with is Sim City 4 (Large Maps), and that's been out for some time . . . .

IMO, this is the true measure of how good the game is: After a bit of gameplay, do I forget all about the hardware and just immerse myself in the game? If the answer is yes, I have myself a winner.

Edit: so, the answer is an emphatic "yes!". (you should make a poll)

I enjoy gaming rather than benchmarks, but I have a system that doesn't benchmark well. I do play older games mostly, and just bought Half-life2 2 weeks ago, when it was $20.

LOL, you find a way. My oldest just graduated High School (youngest Kindergarten), and I work long hours.

There's always time for some gaming :)

The way I see it, some people buy computer hardware because they love to play computer games, and other people buy computer games because they love to play with computer hardware.

Maybe some of the popularity of Battlefield 2 is that it appeals to both groups. It is lots of fun to play, but it also is a rather buggy resource hog, which keeps the tweakers happy figuring out how to make it run better. :D

I love the gaming. The satisfaction of finding a selection of hardware that will run all my games at a great price is great, but it's the hours of gaming I spend that really count. I used to get so immersed in games such as Lords of the Realm, HoMM1/2/3, Civ2/3, Diablo, Starcraft, CS, Dungeon Siege, Natural Selection...GuildWars caught my attention for a short while, and now I'm playing and loving Dungeon Siege 2.

I really want to take a dive into BF2, but I'm worried I may get too hooked and forget about the two games I'm really looking forward to: Civ4 and HoMM5 (<--- YES YES YES YES!).

Supposedly the new team working on HoMM5 is going to base the game off HoMM3, but use some of the newer game mechanics in HoMM4 that worked well, while dumping the ones that made the game slow and unfun. I am stoked.

A couple others that have my interest are F.E.A.R., and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I'm the exact opposite, really. I could care less what my graphics look like, as long as the game itself keeps it's FPS up at a good speed.

I play whatever game(s) I'm in the mood for on my Barton 2600+ and my Geforce4 MX440 video card and I have plenty of fun when I have the time to do it. Of course eye candy is cool, but it has no effect on the playability or enjoyability of the game. One of my favorite strategy games of all time is "Conquest of the New World" it's ancient by today's (released in 1998 I think) standards and the graphics are terrible, but it's just plain fun to play. I think that if people would spend more time enjoying whatever it is you are doing rather than worrying about adding that extra .00001 FPS in a game you don't even like we'd all be much happier. :)

Considering I still play games that a several years old, I'd say I game for the game and not the graphics. Tribes is a great example. Unique gameplay, very old graphics, can still be a lot of fun.

dude far cry is great, i just bought the game and the single player keeps you hooked, i play it everyday. That game is beautiful especially with very/ultra high settings with sm 3.0. Ummm also half life mods are fun not half life 2 mods but the 1st like natural selection and others. I also play battlefield which is extremely fun online, I think everyone would enjoy battlefield 2 probably, unless your system cant run it. I have become more into hardware as well, i constantly find myself on newegg searching for the latest deals on hardware that would provide only a tiny performance gain over my current rig. Altough upgrading a system is fun, in my opinion games are still more enjoyable. Maybe the only one in here who thinks so...

Sometimes I get frustrated with the graphics settings trying to find a good balance of frames and IQ.
