Didn't you have more than one report to file?

Probably

You were also assigned an internal service request from [name] to do a 4 week JSTP at the office - Please advise as to how this is going and what has been accomplished thus far.

You were assigned a new referral on April 9th - please advise whether you've connected with the referral source and claimant to start services?

None of this will need to be dealt with for a couple more weeks...

Well, given that I don't have another job lined up, it's probably in my best interest to keep this one :p

I was just pushing the limits, and really didn't care if I got fired in the process. It's been kinda fun.
Looking for another position when no paychek is coming is not fun.

Granted there isn't much work I could be doing, but I'm not even doing the stuff I can.

I've got a report I've gotta write that's supposed to be sent off to an insurance company tomorrow (I've had 2 weeks to write it), that I haven't started yet and will take at least another week to finish, if I started this week, which I won't.

I don't think I've ever cared less about a job.

My boss is in another city comes in maybe once a month. I don't think I've spoken a word to her in over 3 weeks.

I figure that by the end of next week I'll probably get a phone call asking what's going on and then at a minimum, another 2 weeks before I get fired.

I'm betting on 3 weeks.

What do you guys think?

*Update April 10, 2008*

It's been one week now, and nobody has said a word yet. I took monday, tuesday and wednesday off work. Just said I was sick. Came to work today at 10:30 totally hungover and haven't lifted a finger all day.

*Update April 14, 2008*

I just got this in an email:

Please advise of the following

XXXXXX - this is for an initial assigned March 13th - report is now DUE (30 days from referral) - Please advise.

You were also assigned an internal service request from [name] to do a 4 week JSTP at the office - Please advise as to how this is going and what has been accomplished thus far.

You were assigned a new referral on April 9th - please advise whether you've connected with the referral source and claimant to start services?

I haven't started anything on any of the three things I'm being asked about...

*Update April 15, 2008*

I got a phone call this morning. It startled me a bit, but let it go to voicemail (I was already on the phone).

My senior editor verbally re-stated what was said in the last email and said I needed to get back to her ASAP.

I replied to her email and told her my report was mostly completed, however I was waiting on another form from the clients psychiatrist before I could complete the report. I made no mention of the other items.

Her response was "Your report was due out yesturday - you'll need to get this form asap!

I think I just bought myself at least another couple of weeks :p

*Update April 17, 2008*

I just got another email, this time from my boss...

[my name]

Please send whatever you have done of your initial to [senior] - she will provide direction on what to address with the psychiatrist once consent received.

Update on the file you were waiting to hear back from adjuster?

Your file status for the JSTP has been done?

Please advise

[the boss]

My boss doesn't sound too worried, but the frequency of contact with this person has gone up quite a bit in the last couple of days.

I decided to do the report last night (only took me like 4 hours), although I haven't submitted it yet. I don't wanna screw anyone over. If I get canned, the work is still done.

Should I just submit? When I do, I 'll probably have to change the title of the thread and I'll just become another lazy employee that only does enough to not get fired...

*Update April 17, 2008*

I just submitted my report.

I literally did nothing from March. 21 to April 17.
For a thread supposedly about nothing, it sure delivers.
Congrats on doing.... "it".

You lied to us. You were clearly not doing NOTHING, because your post says you were already on the phone at one point! Liar! Cheat!

Even though he finally did the report the OP has still won. He did absolutely nothing for three weeks, got paid for it, and still has his job. That = winner in my book. There's something to be said for quitting while you're ahead.

Thats cool, he did nothing for a week. Did ONE thing, now he can do nothing for another week? I say see just how bad of an employee you can be but do just enough and I mean Just barely enough to stay afloat. One task per month sounds about right. Oh btw, you are def. feeling sick. I don't think you'll be into work the next 3 days.

And when management gets on your ass again about some assignment *cough cough*. That should at least buy you another week.

Am I missing something here? What makes this the least bit entertaining? Would you all get a big charge out of someone committing insurance fraud or embezzling from their employer? Is it the complete lack of personal pride or any sort of ethics that make it so thrilling? Or is it the passive aggressive aspect that rings your bell? I really don't get it, and I really am trying to understand what makes this so much fun.

i agree.

i think its disgusting. he is not only going to screw over the company but the poeple working for them.

I agree as well.

I realize it is probably late to now mention this as the OP finally did some work, but I just find this somewhat amazing.

I think it is insanely selfish for the OP to take the stance that he does. The fact that other people seem to find a sense of entertainment for this sort of antics speaks volumes about their ethics. It is an utter shame that this behaviour is tolerated and encouraged.

All of the problems in the world start with the choices that an individual makes. Please just make the right choices.

Tell me about it.

I had one job years ago where I literally had 1-2 hours of work per day. I was a temp responsible for pulling documents from a server, printing the documents, and distributing them to the team. It was financials so some days (15th and 1st/30th) it was busy, but most of the days I could be done within one hour spaced out over 3-4 times per day (15 min each).

I tried and tried to get additional work, but I was a temp -- they wouldn't allow it. I cleaned out some old files and then ran out of things to do. I didn't even have a computer to surf the web (I used a dial-up modem).

I started bringing in books to read. Went through a couple dozen. I started taking extended (2+ hours) lunches. Then breaks in the morning. In the afternoon. Eventually, I came in to work in the morning, did the work and went home. Came back in late morning, did the work and went to "lunch". Went in late afternoon, did the work, went home. I billed 8 hours b/c it wasn't my fault there was literally no work to be done. Fortunately, I was only about 3 miles from home so it was very easy to go back and forth.

It had to be readily apparent to the supervisor who signed my timesheets because the entire office was composed of half cubicles so it was pretty friggin' obvious when I wasn't there. She...never...said...a...word. I stayed there for about 8 months and then moved out of state. I didn't like getting paid for absolutely nothing, but I had to pay my bills.

I've known several people in a similar situation. One dude showed up on Friday to do his timesheet. That was it. Period. This went on for months. No one cared. He eventually just moved on to another job.

My company got bought out several years ago and we were all set to lose our jobs but many of us stayed for 6 months for the "stay bonus". There really was nothing to do....we would get menial tasks assigned to us each week that would take about 2-8 hours. We had one guy who literally *never* showed up, unless the higher-ups from the new company were scheduled to come in, then he was in the meetings in the front row with his pen and pad, acting like he gave a crap.

Of course, the joke was on them when the board of directors decided our company was better run than the purchasing company, and they all got canned and we got our stay bonus and got to keep our jobs.

if you ask me, you're burning your own bridge and i hope your future employer will overlook the employment gap when you decided not to put this on your resume.

Dang.

1. My boredom would prevent me from trying this.

2. My guilt would also prevent me from trying this.

3. Rinse and repeat.

*Update April 21, 2008*

I've decided to quit my job. I called my boss and there was no answer, so I had to leave a message asking her to call me back when she had a chance.

Seems ironic somehow...

I'll find it amusing if they give you some line about how you're an important member of the team and they hate to lose you.
