Retired from the Air Force, got divorced, said "fuck it" and moved to Guam. Not a bad place but I certainly won't be here forever. The pay and having nothing to lose was my motivation.

I'd move anywhere but wife and kids has to come. Tho I wouldn't do it for salary alone (unless I have no job). But extended family and friends wouldnt hold me back from a good opportunity or a better quality of life - ie for me it would be no snow, low cost of living, and good schools.
What with the hate on FL?

mostly most of our posters couldn't afford to live here decently.

We get hurricanes which suck. Our insurance because of that is high esp if you are close to the beach.

Plus about 2 out of 3 people on the road are illegals and/or have no insurance and more than likely hoping to be in an accident.

I like it here, I have been many places and couldn't see myself moving away. I'd love to have second/third homes in some places I have been though.

i'd actually take a reduced salary to move to Hawaii or Aruba for work. but since i just bought a house that would make things more difficult, but i think i would maybe still do it if the chance came about.

If you'd take a reduction in pay, I don't think hawaii would be realistic. It's not cheap to live properly there.

There are plenty of places in the US that are on par expenses-wise with Florida. Plenty of people on here can afford to live there. Don't act like you actually live in a nice area...we all know, from your many posts on it, how bad your neighborhood got.

You couldn't pay me to move back to Florida...and I lived in one of the nicer areas (on Las Olas, about a mile from the beach). The people are annoying, the weather is only nice Jan-April, and it is just a small sliver of concrete jungle with the admittedly nice ocean on one side and the uninhabitable Everglades on the other... No thanks.

Las Olas is nice in general, but most that say they lived there lived in the ghetto/craptastic sections.

My grandmother owned at hotel right on Ft. Lauderdale beach, you'd be a fucking moron not to want that life.

i didn't say i'd take a 50% salary reduction or anything, i said i'd take a pay reduction. you have no clue what my current salary is.

i've been there and know the prices of things, and the cost of living is not much more at all than where i currenty live.

Already done it. VA to TX, TX to ND, ND to VA. You do what you have to do. Then again, I have no kids/commitments.

Sixone is full of shit. I moved around as a kid because my dad is in the military and there have been millions of others who have done it. Kids adapt. Stop being a dumb drama queen.

I dunno about that. The cost of housing might be comparable but I can't imagine that other costs are comparable to anywhere else in the 48 states.

Ignoring the 100k thing I wouldn't move to FL for anything less than a 50% raise and even then I doubt I'd take it. Been to FL a few times in various areas and been unimpressed every time. Maybe Miami is nice, haven't been there...

have you been there? i've been there and the prices were nothing outrageous over what i'm used to. gas was more expensive and groceries were a tad more expensive. everything else seemed to be pretty similar to what i'm used to.

but then again, everyone also said las vegas and the atlantis hotel in bahamas was "so expensive" but everything there was pretty comparable to what i'm used to around here, so it didn't seem over the top or anything.

Depends on where it was along with other circumstances. For instance, I wouldn't live in Florida for $200k a year much less $100k.

However, if it was somewhere I wouldn't mind living or somewhere I'd be comfortable, I would move any distance away. Even as far as to Europe, as long as it was in a place I wanted to be and I could work out all of the other details.

My wife is from there and we go just about yearly. We've seriously looked into moving there a few times and done the detailed comparison of costs. It isn't one big thing but more a death by a thousand cuts where everything (aside from local produce and seafood) is more expensive.

Call me a moron. Living in the mountains in British Columbia is the only way I'm moving far away. Beaches and hot weather do jack shit for me. Must be a Canadian thing.

I'd move to the pacific northwest in a heartbeat for comparable pay all other things being equal.

I'm with you 100%. Denver is too hot for me, I actually might move once(if) house prices go up and I can get fair value for my house.

Those hot places are nice to visit, but yeah I'd hate to live in the heat all the time. We get it for 2 months and it's good enough for me.

Florida is actually a fairly inexpensive place as far as housing. You can get some monster houses for cheap (4000sqft near $250k) or maybe that is just cheap to me comparing to my area.

That said $100k will buy you well past your necessities. But, on more than one occasion I've turned down $20-$30k increases due to not wanting to leave family. Haven't regretted it.
