how far would you move away for a 100k job?

I wouldn't (and my wife and I don't make that much together now). The next move I make will be to sell my house, downsize to a much smaller one and use the money to help retire just that much earlier (can't wait).

The thread is pretty interesting because it's obvious when it comes to moving, money isn't a motivator for most. In fact, most people would probably be unwilling to move a significant distance for ANY reason.

part of me would enjoy moving just for the change, but i would feel bad since all my family is here

have had some really good job opportunities come up (long term consulting @ 100$/hour) but did not pursue because they were a couple states away
 
Been in 49 states. Worked in 24 states.
Moving for work allows excellent chance to see country

And I'd try to save most of it. I did some math and if I wanna retire the way I like, will need to make 100 grand for many years and keep as much as possible in an IRA or something. A matching IRA would be ideal.
 
I would move pending on where the place is, living expenses, and the salary have to be substantially more than that.

There are contracts that I can pick up in Canada North West Territories that is slightly more than 2X the OP offered salary. It is very tempting, but I do not think that I can live for 3-4 months a year in -20C or colder in complete darkness.

Easier said than done, because you will find ways to spend it all.

To a nice place only. I could probably change jobs and get that if I wanted. So not sure. Tack on 25k and I might be willing to move further somewhere in the US.

It'd be nice if it was possible to save most of $100k 😉 Even without a car payment...just a reasonable lifestyle and mortgage payment is more than most of it a year. I'd say $100-150k is the critical mass though in most areas of the country and once past that it's more gravy that can be saved.

no way to use just an IRA and retire any time soon, it only lets you put in 5000$ per year

you gotta max 401k + roth IRA + i bonds each year, plus buy some taxable as well

i make under 100$k and manage to save %60 of gross

but i dont lease an m3 :awe:
 
I moved across the country for the weather. Almost anywhere else in the country would be closer to family.
 
If it was somewhere I desperately wanted to go (Ireland, New Zealand, Alaska) I'd move for a $30k/yr job once my responsibilities here are done. If it was somewhere I didn't want to be I'd require about a million a year so I could retire after one year. If it was somewhere I REALLY HATED it'd take me about a million a month so I could retire after one month. If I disagreed with the job itself then no amount of money would get me to move, no matter what.
 
1) I wouldn't just look at the current salary, I'd look at the company, future advancement opportunity, and if I like the job.
2) Are you talking about leaving family like wife and kids, or family like parents and siblings? Leaving wife and kids - huge issue. Parents and siblings? Doesn't matter even if you are half way around the world. Friends? lol, you can make friend anywhere....
3) Florida is not half bad comparing to some other states....
 
Depends on where the job is. I already make that much now so if it was in a city I'd rather live in I might take it
