How does everyone choose what digital camera they are gonna buy?

I think I want to get my girlfriend a digital camera for Christmas. I have been researching them lately, but there seem to be so many, and many get awesome reviews at the exact same price points. Then I have to deal with the dang hot deals that always seem to be popping up. Everytime that happens I have to go check out reviews of whatever camera is on sale. Should I just pick one I like and wait for a deal, or keep on reviewing the cameras from hot deals?


I want a good point and shoot camera of at least 3 MP, although more is always better. I have been looking at a lot of Canons, they always seem to get good reviews. But there are so many other brands getting good reviews to. Help

I went to a store and tried all the cameras in my price range and finally decided to get the Panasonic DMC-FZ20.

Unless you plan on buying a top of the line $800+ camera you will want a different camera or two after about 3-6 months of use.


My first camera was a Fuji 2600Z 2.1mp and 3x optical. Paid $250 2.5yrs ago

Decided resolution wasnt all that important but I wanted a more full featured camera with a big optical. On a Low Budget I picked up a Panasonic Leica FZ1 2.1MP 12X Optical with Image Stabilization for $199 + tax about 8-months ago. Love the ZOOM!

Now I want a micro camera with 2-3MP and 3-4X Optical Like the Pentax Optio S.

Imho, you can't go wrong with a Canon. Just decide what features you want... Price point, size, optical zoom, etc.

And get the Canon that fits your needs/wants.

if you're on a tight budget: sd110-3mp,2x,$200(-$30 if you get approved for the amazon card) and no memory card error or E18 problems like the s400/410/500/sd200/300. that's what i recommended for my gf.

i totally agree with this - canon's are great build quality, great combo of features, great product line-up with something for everyone at the various price points. several features i really like:

- many use regular AA batteries, rechargables are cheap and plentiful (ie, competition!) and in a pinch you can use the throw-aways.
- use widely available and inexpensive cf memory cards.

bottom line, tho, is decide what features are important to you, narrow down the field based on that, go to a store to try out what's left and see how you like it, narrow it down more to one/two models, then search the web for the best prices and buy the one with the best price/feature ratio.

good luck! if you'd care to hear the feature set i used to decide let me know. and by the way i currently own a canon a80, prior to that had a fuji finepix 1mp an an olympus 3mp. canon is by far the best of the three.

Another vote for Canon cameras here... I did a ton of research last year before buying mine (sites like http://www.dcresource.com/, http://www.dpreview.net/, etc. as well as trying them out in store) and I love the Canon s400 I picked. Great quality picture, great startup & shot-to-shot time, and awesome size. :)

You definitely should try out the cameras yourself before just buying one online.

Ornery, in one of the posts in your link I see you highly praised the Sony DSCV1, do you still feel it is a worth while purchase? I can get it at cructhfield for under 300.00 with 18 month no interest financing.

i got a 3.2MP pansonic, free 128MB SD card after MIR, free photo printer after MIR for $250 last year . . .

thats how i chose

Simple. I figure out how much I want to spend and what features I want. Then I figure out which Canon camera fits the best into those parameters and I usually end up getting the one that is a step above that. :p

Edit-Very happy 300D owner here. :thumbsup:

based it on requirements (zoom, +3MP), price (sub $250), and eventually, brand. I went with the canon, since I've had such a great experience with my slr rebel.

my next camera will probably be the digital rebel. I like having a small point-and-click camera for weddings and parties and stuff, but there are still times when I break out my rebel and then need to go through the hassle of getting the film developed and scanning the pictures into my computer.

I don't think anyone has said that Canon is better than Sony, or anyone else, for that matter.

We just like Canon. :)
