You know why I'd choose the Canon S410 over that Sony... Size.

The Sony is taller, wider, and more than twice as thick.

as great as that camera is, i will NEVER BUY ONE,

unless Sony makes one that takes Compact Flash

and DONT say MS only costs a few $ more, last time i checked teh 512 meg Sandick ultra 2 mem stick pro cost 2x as much as teh CF version

Sure, if you look at specs and price only. Canon has years of experience with film and lenses. It is a fact that you can take cameras with identical specs and features and get far better results with one (cough**Canon**cough) than another.

BTW-I'm not a brand whore. I bought a Sony camcorder over Canon because I think Sony makes a better camcorder than Canon does...or at least they did at the time I bought my camcorder.

And Carl Zeiss doesn't?

Add the extra price of the memory, and tell me what the total comes to. Then, add the price of the compact flash to any other camera, and what do you get? I'll give you a hint, NOTHING even close the V1. Anything smaller than that, has no where near the features. If smallness were the only criteria, then HUGE compromise is in your future picture taking. I've got zero interest in that characteristic. Might as well compare who makes "the best" corded phone or something.

Well since we are arguing about it, can someone show me mor einof about the differant memory cards? I have had no use for them as of yet. I was just browsing prices and it seems like there are several differant types, which i did know, but it also seems that there are a few differant flavors of the sony memory stick. Looks like maybe a regular one, a pro one and a pro duo maybe, whats the differance and what would I need for that camera Ornery.

"Huge compromise"??? Not hardly. The Canon S series are excellent cameras and take excellent pictures. (Take note that I'm NOT saying the Sony's are bad.)

And because of the size, I take it with me most everywhere I go. With a larger camera, I probably would've missed a lot of opportunities. 🙂

The best bang for the buck will be in the 256MB size, and I'd wait till there's a good sale/rebate going on before I stocked up. Buying a camera based on the storage media is ludicrous in so may ways. If it makes any difference, I've heard of people bending one of the MANY fragile pins used in the compact flash media, but the memory sticks use ten contacts exactly like a computer card's slots... an indestructable and small, slim, form factor, which seems to be oh so important to some people.

"Huge compromise"??? Not hardly.

Does it have 4X zoom? Hologram Autofocus Assist? A flash hotshoe? A bright (low F) lens? Manual focus...

your girlfriend probably wants something small in size that can take good quality pictures. i'm a photographer enthusiast girl myself, and while i've had 3 digital cameras in the past 4 years, i was not looking for those major features that most photographers look for that come in bulky camera sizes like the D70. and if your girl isn't going to be walking around all the time with a camera, she's obviously doesn't need those features either -- especially if she hasn't purchased a digital camera by now.

so i'd really go with the canon powershot s410. it's affordable and takes great pictures. it's also super small. 🙂

I don't really think I would need more then 256MB anyways. I don't think I would ever be away from my computer for long enough to fill that without being able to offload to my computer.

Size isn't my main concern in this purchase. Don't get me wrong, I don't want something that requires a dufflebag to carry around. But its not like this thing will permanately reside in her purse. It will mainly be used for special occasions. Basically the only differance in size between the S410 and the Sony Ornery mentioned is in depth, the sony being almost twice as thick. It also appears that I can get both for about the same price. And don't think I am trying to dispute what your saying(since I really don't know)but what else am I getting from the S410 besides size that is worth it being the same price as the sony. It appears to have less optical zoom and 4MP as opposed to 5MP in the sony. What other benefits does it offer me?

Yes, those are compromises... But I wouldn't consider Manual focus or an extra-X optical zoom "huge". To be honest, I'm not a camera geek (although I would like to be), so I can't really comment on the other whatchamacallits. 😱

All I know is that my S400 takes excellent pictures. And if I'm missing out on those features for a camera half as thick... So be it. 🙂

Carl Zeiss is a name. It is a brand name that Sony paid to use on their camera lenses. I'd bet that their glass is the same quality as the glass used in the Canon cameras. Certainly no better.

1 year parts & labor warranty VS 1 year parts and 90 days labor. That's a difference, but NOTHING compared to being able to actually lock focus in low, or no light at all. That's worth a fortune. Talk about not missing shots!

then get the S500 if you want 5mp. i have that.

to be perfectly honest, i don't know what makes the sony better than the canon. i do know that when i wanted a camera, i told my father that i was looking at the sony and at the canon. he, with his infinite photographic knowledge (and a ton of subscriptions to a variety of photography magazines), surprised me and got me the canon. i never asked why, but he said that the canon was much better than the sony.

and i really have no complaints. small is good. women have enough to carry, so even if she's going to be using the camera only occasionally, she'd want a smaller one. why don't you ask her?
