Sometimes I'll also wear some shorts just to add a little extra heat to my upper legs.

Are you kidding? Good lord. When it's -40C here I'm just wearing parka, toque, mitts and jeans. I could probably walk a mile before I start getting really uncomfortable.

I can't even imagine wearing thermal leggings around 0 degrees celsius... that's not even too cold for my spring jacket, no gloves, no hat. I'd be sweating like a pig.

For me:
Long underwear. And not the cheap Hanes crap either.

I also like the Silk Skins, but havent seen them in a while. Those work great, especially as part of a multi-layer thing when you have to go out into extreme cold.

For girls:
I give them socks.

Sexy socks.

Dont laugh, the girls love them.
And then they love me.
MUCH better gift than lingerie. Seriously. Ask your girl, she will be very enthusiastic.

I would seriously laugh at anyone I saw wearing long johns.

If you spend much time outdoors when it's really cold (under 20 I'd say) they are absolutely necessary.

Hint: he doesn't go outside.

Thermal underwear FTW. BTW, 30 degrees isn't cold. Cold is 30 below in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota...

And I wore only boxer and jeans during that temp.

How do you keep your legs warm? You can't put a coat over your jeans.

how much time are you spending outside?

unless im going skiing i never wear long johns/thermals unless i have to be outside for an extended period and its -50F with the wind blowing. Jeans/kackis/whatever pants are all you really need unless you live in the arctic.

i used to walk to school in boston ~2.5 miles and cross the Mass Ave bridge in the winter and never wore anything other more then pants on my legs

Generally, I wear shorts unless I'm at work.

If it gets cold, then I wear jeans. They keep my legs warm.
I have wool socks for my feet as well as a decent pair of boots.

This winter, it's been pretty decent, the coldest temp to hit was around 5 deg F one morning, with like a -20 F or so wind chill. It was a bit chilly with shorts on, but, my hands were much colder than my legs. If I had gloves in addition to my hoodie, then I would almost be comfortable.

I usually ignore my legs. If my core is warm, I'm pretty good. Yes, the legs send annoyance signals, but I ignore them. If it is cold outside and I'm working, then I get so hot that I don't even need a coat or anything even in below zero temps. But if I have to be outside and not doing any real work, then long johns help a lot. WinterSilks is a company with silk long johns if you want them to feel like they aren't even there unlike the common bulky cotton ones.

I wear shorts at home year round. At work I wear normal pants, don't do anything special just because it is winter.
