If you spend much time outdoors when it's really cold (under 20 I'd say) they are absolutely necessary.

when i was on the AT last year, early on in georgia when it was colder, i used silk. silk works better then long johns in my opinion if you have to use something. Patagonia makes some great stuff.

Ok, maybe if you are camping or something.

30? MAN UP!

I used to have great cold tolerance. Then my girlfriend made me buy a coat, and now I get cold like a normal person.

Or even golfing in 30-40 degree weather. 4 hours outside even at 30-40 degrees with wind and you're legs are going to get cold fast.

I have 1 pair of long johns for when it's really cold but here in the north Atlanta area it's not often that it's much below 30f during the day in the winter and jeans cut it for me most of the time.

lmao! After I got married, my mother-in-law & wife insisted I wear a coat "like a normal person". I consider anything above about 35 degrees to be shorts weather - unless I'm going to be trudging through snow deeper than my sneakers. If I have to wear boots, then it's jeans or sweat pants.

If it's less than 20 degrees outside & I'm going to be outside for 8 straight hours (hunting season), then I'll put on a pair of thermal underwear. If I do though, then I have to be careful not to exert myself; if I do, I'll sweat my ass off.

Thermal underwear leggings and jeans...at least that is the max I ever need in Houston.

Sometimes I'll also wear some shorts just to add a little extra heat to my upper legs.
I never knew it got that cold down there! Then again, the last time I went to Florida in February & went swimming at the beach, the locals were all wearing winter jackets. Soft - you southerners are soft. :p

And this is why your meat is cold.

Well you're just abnormal. And that's ok! ;)

I'll only have shorts on if it's above 80°F, reasonable humidity, and not especially breezy, though my anticipated level of physical activity will also influence my decision on what to wear.

How do you keep your legs warm? You can't put a coat over your jeans.

...You can layer your lower half just like your upper half.

Jeans are also part of the problem. They suck for heat retention/weather blocking.

Northern Vermont here. Underwear+thermal socks+haramaki+long johns+fleece/sweat top with neck protection and 'shell' pants like jeans with a Carhartt jumpsuit to cover it all. Waterproof boots, scarf, hat, goggles and mittens with glove liners.

This is what I wore slinging wood on a green chain outdoors for many winters. You will stay warm but look absolutely retarded.
