I want a color screen, but dont feel like paying 150+ bucks more for just that. Because i wont be using alot of space.

How much can i get off for a student discount? Thanks guys!

Well i dont get any student discounts :( i live in the UK though so....

As for the mini itsself, i think the new mini is great and i wouldve rather had one of the new minis over my 20gig 4g ipod simply because of the 18 hour? battery life it offers, ill never use more than 2 gig anyways :) and the mini has 4-6 gigs memory. Its also small colored and looks cool. NEW ipod mini - 10/10

iPods only play things supported by iTunes. So, from a quick Help search, they play AAC/plain mp4, mp3, AIFF, WAV, and Apple Lossless.

iTunes converts them for you.
Going from one lossy format to another will result in a noticeable degradation in sound quality. Ipods also don't play ogg or flac, and they're among the worst in sound quality and battery life, and are the highest in price. Further, they have no recording or radio tuning capabilities. Shake off that marketing spell they put you under, kiddo, save money and get a better player at the same time, it's win-win.

Edited for spelling

I just bought the new 5 gig Samsung. it's the Yepp YH820.
it plays mp3, wma, ogg and maybe other formats.. it has a colour LCD and it will do the photo thing like the ipod photo. it has a voice recording function, but more interestng i think is that it has a line-in that records any input into an mp3 file (you set the bitrate)... and it looks really nice imo

the cons: battery life is only 8.5 hours compared to the new ipod mini's 18 hour. and, you have to use the samsung studio program to transfer songs to it.

accoding to samsung, this unit has an upgradeable firmware, so i'm wondering whether there's gonna any third party firmware that will make it even more interesting..
Yepp YH820

the only thing that i'm unsure of is whether I should've opted for the 20 gig model... that way i can also use it as an external drive since xp recognizes it as an external storage device... and it's interesting because your music doesn't even appear when you access the device through my computer

edit: the price on that link is in CAD$

I love my 40gb 4g ipod. To all you ipod haters I have this to say: all portable media players suck to some degree. The ipod is just the less suckiest. :)

well i've had the 5 gig model for a few days as i posted above, and i like it...

pros:
-it has a line-in that can record any source into an mp3 file (as well as a simple voice recorder)
-bright colour display
-it's gonna double as an external storage device
-looks nicer than the ipod imo
-i can get one for 330 CAN$, so it's a good deal i think

cons:
-i wish battery life was more than 8.5 hours

iPods may be overpriced, but they're also useable. Seriously. I've tried other HD players, and the interfaces tend to suck. Besides being ugly.

Still, I'd rather get a $99 512 meg Shuffle and refill it every day. Best deal out there for my kind of listening.

I like my mini. My only complaint is that it would be nice to have an AM/FM radio. That way I wouldn't get so bored of my playlists.
