I already have voted for a female Dem to be President - Secretary Clinton in 2016.

But there are others ... Gretchen Whitmer, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Rhode Island's Gina Raimondo.

I don't believe New York's Kathy Hochul would make a strong candidate and unfortunately, folks might not warm up to Stacey Abrams.

But right now, I'm sticking with Joe Biden, who's evolved from the guy who opposed school busing and who supported the 1994 Crime Bill.

I admire a man and a woman who can change. Joe did. I'm with Joe.

It seems part of the problem with the bench is the lack of D governors, at least the ones likely to move to national office. They keep pushing senators.

Gore, Kerry, Obama, H Clinton and now Biden.
Last D gov was Bill Clinton.

Gavin Newsome.

Probably too much baggage but he isn't afraid to troll back.

eelw,

Yes, Katie Porter.

I know, I know. How did I forget her? Probably the same way I forget everything else. Ran out of nickels in the brain booth.

I did suggest Gavin Newsome as a possibility some weeks back. I think he'd be a perfect debate opponent for Ron DeSantis.

Trump will simply violate the debate rules again - unless he takes two ex-lax.

What about that Michigan state representative that tore the GOP a new one?

It's important to note that Lincoln was never a senator or governor but he was very much in tune with how the party felt at the time.

Yeah, he's about the only D gov I can think of that can make the jump to the national stage (not that he'd be my candidate.)

It's purplish state D govs that seem to be missing. Eg Polis of CO, Wolf of PA...

Someone other than yet another senator

I voted for Bloomberg in the Dem primary. I think he was younger, Joe seemed older (he was), and I'd overlooked Joe's early-life stuttering problem which still shows up in his delivery. Yet, I had heard Joe's rhetorical performance rise to the inspirational in recent years, wondering as to which priest gave sermons during his church-going experience.

I can't imagine holding up as well as either Obama did or Joe does now.

I'll vote for anyone who (a) isn't a criminal; (b) advertises a commitment to "good government"; and (c) has demonstrated some competency with a career in public life. Despite my primary vote for Bloomberg, it's time to destroy the "bidnis-man" myth. It's bullshit. I want a lawyer, a former governor, a former senator . .. how about a "community organizer"? The civil service has an army of MBAs and MPAs. And I've seen some of Trump's appointee choices -- rich "bidnis-men" dumber than a sack of rocks -- and even criminal, like DeJoy.

As Bob d'Niro said after Trump's election: "Push back harder." I want a BETTER Social Security, a BETTER Medicare, a BETTER VA and VA benefits, a STRENGTHENING of public schools especially in shit-hole places like West Texas. I want the tax-exemptions for all those Trump-supporting evangelical churches revoked, and even retroactive payback.

And if it were possible, I want exclusively GOP voters and influentials to pay back every dime spent on the Iraq War. The GOP has F***ed over America consistently going back decades.

Frankly, if it weren't for the fact that every major city in Red states is Blue, I'd want to turn all the deep Red states into one big federal territory under military occupation and permanent reconstruction.

Then -- we can "Make America Good Again". And also, particularly for Wyoming, I would make it illegal to wear cowboy hats and boots like their mother's shoes. They don't need any rights; they don't need any freedoms; they just need to pack their bags and go back to their home galaxy.

If the cornpone shitasses need wide-brimmed hats to protect them from the sun, they can wear women's pink straw summer hats while they ride on their horses.

And also -- in the giant federal territory -- outlaw rodeos and provide a federal subsidy for exclusively GOP abortions. Then, human progress can resume.

I wouldn't say he's been all bad. Obviously I haven't paid that much attention to domestic US issues, but from what I've seen he's been better than I expected him to be. If the right want to blame him for inflation, then they'll have to allow us in the UK to blame our right-wing government for the even worse inflation crisis here.

Though this sums up one major reason why I'm not hugely enthusiastic about him.

The US has had a faustian bargain with SA for too long. All US POTUSES are complicit. Trump was only the worst because he and his son-in-law have business dealings there.

This is yet another reason for the world to get off fossil fuels ASAP. No one will any longer give a crap about appeasing and coddling them.

I had planned to reply to this in a similar way and got sidetracked. This is as much of the reason to get off the oil addiction as the damage being done to the climate. Remember fortunes were made early in this country by selling one of the most addictive drugs in the world today.

He has taken a lot of favourable steps in the past few months , a lot of people had been skeptical of him as the changes where not coming very quickly, and what seemed at the time to be inaction. He’s not perfect by a long shot but he’s timing some policy changes perfectly.

another new good policy

Man why do Republicans shit the bed at the thought of someone making sure their taxes are paid? You all sound like a bunch freeloaders.

Also the IRS needs massive amounts of technology investments to make ulp for the decades of deliberate neglect. To be a functioning first world country we need a functioning first world tax system.
Who do you think the IRs is going to squeeze for the extra money? Big Companies? They just raise prices to offset any loss of money. The rich? They have lawyers and accountants to make it difficult to recover money. The poor? Nothing to collect. The middle class? They have just enough money to go after but not enough to put up any vigorous defense.

We are going to have another armed part of the government that will get to bully people for a few extra pennies. The US government has a spending problem and not a revenue problem. I can't wait for the new and improved Robin Hood aka the IRS to distribute the wealth around.

Oh no, whatever you do, don't tax the rich or businesses, they will leave!!! How did any of that work before saint reagan ? I thought you fucking morons wanted to make America great again? America was great when people/businesses paid taxes and the government actually did shit for the needy people of this country(and not the needy rich). America used to build infrastructure projects that were the envy of the world, now ya'll can barely fix a goddamn highway without years of bickering.

The fygm mentality of the united states in the last 40+ years will be the end of a just society and will turn you into a 3rd world banana republic with nukes if you don't change it soon.

And ya'll have the fucking audacity to invoke god into a lot of shit while completely ignoring his teachings, it's just astounding.

Actually, Joe Biden is doing pretty good at focusing on the middle class and helping the middle class. Especially lately. But too many people are not giving Joe the credit. Too many people are not giving Joe Biden the credit because they think Joe is too old to deserve the credit. Yes, the middle class people like what president Joe Biden is delivering, but they still believe him to be too old and not deserving of the credit. It's kinda weird. Actually... VERY WEIRD!

I don't know....
Are people thinking that someone behind the scenes is giving them all of this good stuff? Not Joe, but someone behind the scenes? Do people think that Joe Biden is too old to think up this good stuff on his own? Do people think the country is running on auto-pilot? That the good stuff is just happening on its own?
Yeah, I just don't get it.

Joe is old and frail and a lot like my own 93 year old dad, but obviously Joe is still smart enough to know what he wants and what the middle class working people want, and this is what drives Joe Biden. After all... Joe campaigned on this, and was elected on this, and Joe is finally delivering but yet the people do not seem to be giving Joe Biden his deserved credit. However, they had better start.... They had better wake up and realize a second term Joe Biden would be far superior for them and for America than a second term Donald Trump. Or..... far better than a first term Ron DeSantis.

DING DING DING people.... WAKE UP. Time is running out. November is just around the corner. Don't keep hitting the snooze button.

No brainer. Biden over any repub. Not that I think Biden is anything special, just the alternative from a party that still glorifies Trump does not have country's best interests at heart.

Momentum is definitely swinging in his direction. And if the whispers I'm hearing of a marijuana de/re-schedule in Sept/Oct are true, you can write off the midterms.

Cliffs:
-the rich cheat and don't pay taxes
-it's hard to collect taxes from them because they have accountants
- the IRS should NOT hire their accountants to make sure taxes are paid, because *socialism*

What in the holy F logic....

Contemporary conservatives, the words that come out of their mouths and their behavior, are always good for a quick and effective look into the well-predicted results of their very own 4 decades-long assault on mental health care in the US.

So you believe the government shouldn't take steps to ensure everyone is paying their taxes? Are you aware that it is the rich and big business who cheat on their taxes, and rarely the middle class, lower class, or small busines?
Are you aware that this country was the most prosperous when taxes where the highest? How is it that taxes are 1/3 to 1/2 of what they where back then, we have a lot of the rich cheating the system and not paying taxes, yet you say the government has a spending problem? Can you pay your bills on 1/3 to 1/2 of your income? Would you just let it go if your employer wasn't paying you your full salary, or would you take steps to get your money? Do you have a spending problem or a revenue problem if you are earning 1/3 to 1/2 of your previous income and/or your employer is not paying you all of your income?

You know, someday, many of us wish you would pull your head out of your ass just once...

And if that comes to pass, I hope there's also restitution programs for those unjustly incarcerated for possession crimes to help them get back on their feet and back into society

Besides a blanket pardon for anyone with federal-level possession convictions, he has asked state Governors to do the same for respective state-level convictions.

There will obviously be idiotic (read: GOP) Governors that won't comply with the presidential request, but it puts the ball in their court to turn it down and look like the jackasses they are.

The schedule change for prosecution is huge imho and should have happened a long time ago.

FFS do you pay your taxes BB? I do. Every other middle class worker I know does. The vast majority of us don't itemize, so there is nothing to audit. A computer looks at my return and finds my mistakes, and I have made a couple over the years. The automated system says " hey you forgot this" No problem, I pay the difference.
My middle class return is not going to be pored over by this new 'army of auditors'. The top 1% that have complicated messes and deductions and whatnot are going to get looked at. I could not be more pleased.
