Hell if I care. I log on once a year to rebalance my funds and then forget about it. I still have 25 years before I can tap into any of that money. If the market tanks, fine with me, just means I'm picking up more shares.

22.4% for 2007. I switched most of my 401k to a Bond fund before the market started to tank.

* Equity Income
* Equity Index 500
* International Stock
* Mid-Cap Growth
* Prime Reserve
* Science and Technology
* Small-Cap Value
* Spectrum Growth
* Spectrum Income

I'm self-employed, so I have a 401k, a SEP IRA a few other tax-deferred and/or tax-deductible accounts and of course non-qualified accounts. I had a 29% return last year.

I know that's not normal as the average is ~12%. This is a combination of real estate and various funds. I have a relatively high percentage in international. I also trade a portion with a strategy that my partners and I designed to run as an automated trading system.

And you better be glad that the US market is closed today after looking at the European and Asian markets (some down by as much as 13%).

My diversified international fund is actually what's saving my butt right now (up slightly).

I moved out of most of my US stock positions earlier this month and into bonds. I've upped my accumulation of US stocks though so I can pick some up cheaper on the way down. Dropped back to +6% (from 11%) now over for the last 13 months.

With European markets down 4% up to 6% today and Asian markets down as much as 13% today (China down nearly 6%, Singipore down 13%, etc), I doubt it will stay positive for long.

Probably, though US markets are going to take yet another hit when they reopen so hopefully I've staunched off some of the bleeding. Though the bonds will be in trouble when the fed cuts rates again.

In other news my metal holdings are doing quite well....

check this
RoR for 1-1-07 - 12-31-07: 3.7%
RoR for Jan 1 '08 - Jan 18th: (10.8%)

and this happens when my 401k just about hit the six figures.....and I was feeling good about it too....

i think they should privatize 401k so we get more investment choices rather than the pidly 6 choices we have now.....
oh well, shouldn't have looked at this thread in the first place...

What are you investing in? You have a lower than average rate of return last year and a high than average rate of loss this year?

I don't really know, my mommy does it for me. Then again, she's an accountant and I really don't care much for financial activities. I just know I have a healthy amount in my 401k savings which was started @ 21.

EDIT>> logged in and for 1/1/07 it states that I have $0 balance which is interesting. 12/31/07 is a much higher amount. So I can't check the RoR. Must be the transition to the new service but they should at least have a record of what I had those dates.

Bah.

I have two, when I left my last company, they never sent me the paperwork to rollover, and they have kept the account active. I left it there because schwab has better choices and I'm content to let it grow. I got 23% on this one, mostly because of the matching employer stock that has been doing great. It went up 35.3% last year. Too bad I left before I got vested, so my actual rates will be lower, but if I go back to work for them(a possibilty when school is done, depending on where I move), I should be able to get their money back.

My current employer's 401k with fidelity, has much crappier options and I've been ignoring it. I really need to change it up some, but it's depressing to look at after leaving the schwab site. In fact, I apparently don't know my pin to log in, and don't have my account number handy to reset it, so just suffice to say IIRC it was near 10%

+1 vote for a finance forum. Wtf, you have forum for every other idiotic & useless topic. How about something useful?

BTW my RoR sucked total ass, a forum on this topic would have been useful this year.

I asked also for a finance forum but was told last time "Not going to happen" so that's that.

I checked a statement, my portfolio grew about 6%. Not too bad all things considered, I might some more into more aggressive indexes once the markets start to turn or look like they've hit bottom, but for now 80% of my portfolio is weighed towards slow growth/stability right now.

large cap - 25%
small cap - 30%
mid cap - 20
International - 16%
company stock - 4%
bonds - 5%

also, my employer switched our investment choice during July 2007 which made it a little better than before....

I just started this month and made $10 so far. I went all in, pretty much as aggressive as I can afford... why not.

My question is, say I reached retirement and chose to retire in a different country simply because everything is cheaper with free health care; in addition conversion rate ... I will be better off. Do they cut me a check or what? how much money do they cut then?
