I started around mid-vanilla, and played all the way to the end of wotlk, minus a little break at the end of BC.

What eventually made me quit was the perfect storm that was Cataclysm. The two main reasons I began playing WoW was because 1) All my friends were playing it, and 2) I wanted a little more closure to the WC3 storyline. Well, wotlk pretty much wrapped up the WC3 story, and by that time, most of my friends had move on to other games. So I had zero interest in the storyline of Cata.

On top of that, I was not fond of the changes Blizzard made to the core mechanics of the game. Especially for healers. The consolidation of stats didn't help either.

And if that wasn't enough, there wasn't really much new content either. It felt like a remake of Vanilla, and that was definitely not what I was looking for to keep me interested in the game.

Those 3 reasons combined finally tipped me over the edge. I haven't looked back since.

I played pretty hardcore in Vanilla/TBC. I did come back and play WOTLK and Cataclysm but only on a casual basis for a couple of months each. I like how Blizzard has made the game more accessible to casual players and made efforts to reduce time commitments, but I also think that has removed some of what made the original WoW great (World PVP, running into other factions while going to dungeons or out farming, etc). They took away the server community with cross faction dungeons and BG's.

These changes made the game much nicer to pick up as a casual player for a bit but made me less inclined to go back and play a lot like I did the original (not to mention the time commitments I am no longer willing to give to the game).

Oh, and destroying PVP with death knights didn't help (they should have never introduced a class that can teleport enemy players).

Pretty much the same for me as everyone else in here. I logged in, asked myself "How is this fun?", logged out. Haven't played since. That was at least 5 years ago.

Got bored. Got sick of retarded guilds trying to dictate me life over a game. Got sick of Blizzard ignoring solo/casual players. Sold my account. Spent the proceeds on hookers & blow.

Started/bought the game because of an Ex-gf. Hated the warcraft lore, didn't pay any attention to the story, hated the "graphics". Deleted my account and done.

I played some amount in vanilla but was never in a good guild that did anything more than MC, which was really time consuming and boring (but I still liked the epicness of the old 40 man raids). When BC came out though I switched servers and found a really good fun guild. Played super hard core in BC through sunwell, had a great time. When LK came out though our guild turned casual. No one wanted to work on progression, just grind easy mode raids over and over. Game started to get real boring for me at this point, I only logged in to raid because I was the MT and guild depended on me, I wasn't really enjoying it. When they released the coliseum raid is when I pretty much quit, that shit was just phoned in by blizzard and was so boring. Also it was so easy my guild didn't need need organized raids any more and we just fell apart. At that point I quit and started using my afternoons to go to the gym instead and get back in shape.

A little before cata came out, and due to my nostalgia for the good old days of raiding in BC, I applied for a top tier guild to tank for through cata. When I logged in for the raid tryout (heroic LK), I played for about 2 hours and then quit and said "screw it, I made a mistake, I'm sick of this game. Sorry for wasting your time". And that was that. While I miss the social interaction with my old guild, I can't stand trying to start over and being the new guy in a new guild. Especially since the game itself is boring. I really only ever played WoW for the social interaction.

Stopped playing retail for over a year and then discovered molten-wow, a private server. Downloaded the client, made a character, and joined a 20x server. Its more fun when you can level to 80 in a weekend of playing. Got my son to play with me (he's 11), and we are levelling up some night elf characters, a priest and a rogue. Having fun with it a few hours a week and since its free, if I don't play, it doesn't cost me a thing.

I'd only come back to WoW just as Ulduar was released having previously played during vanilla and got to 60, but no high end raiding. On a Saturday night, my guild was doing the 25-man Argent Tourney raid. I don't know what it was, but something just clicked inside me. "I don't feel like doing this anymore." So I just up and quit out of WoW and closed Vent. Didn't say anything to the guildies. I'd only been with them for a month and I frankly found the guildmasters to be annoying. For all I know, they probably think I suffered some horrible demise. But I uninstalled WoW there and never went back.

Played from the beta for some time. One night after doing an MC run and trying to keep up with points and so on I said to myself, "What the hell am I doing? This really isn't fun anymore and I have better things to do." After that night I disconnected and never looked back.

I played briefly (like sporadically for a month or two) around launch and got bored and quit. Later, a friend signed up and promised to play with me, so I resubbed only to find he would never play with me and then quit after a month. I haven't played since and I think I was only level 20 or so.

I played then didn't. Easy.

This.

I played for my first 25 or 30 levels or so, then got bored and quit like I do with all MMOs. I am, however, still quite into SWTOR at level 43. We'll see if that holds.

I must have been the only person who never even got into raiding and thus never got frustrated by it.

OTOH I really liked world PVP while questing. The game IMO was most fun as a level 26 druid.

LOL. Not sure if serious or...

But, the first big time I quit close to the release of wotlk I did the same. Thought it would be cathartic to sell my account and gold and give quitting some permanency. I also knew it had some decent value and as far as I was concerned for all the time wasted, I had every right to sell it if I pleased.

I made close to $2000 for the gold I had and had my account lined up to sell for $1700 until I got an email saying it was permanently banned for conduct against the 'essence of the game' They busted me for selling my gold. :colbert:

I really only ever played WoW for the social interaction.

Unfortunately, I think the social aspect of WoW has really died off quite a bit since Vanilla. People can still be rather chatty within their guild, but I remember the days when servers would get together and chat with each other, and just joke around. It was almost like an episode of Cheers but with "your momma" jokes thrown in for juvenile humor. :p

I still talk to some of the Horde players (I played Alliance) from my old server. I know just about no one outside of my guild on my current server.

I absolutely loved FFXI exactly for that aspect. Forced partying is something that the "modern" MMO model lacks, IMHO. It forces teamwork, dedication, and unites the community. With WoW, you have people that quickly get an instance and never say a word to each other and run redundant questing that's soloable for the casual gamer.

You don't need to force someone to play in a group to make them a good team player. In my opinion, the demise of the PUG in modern MMOs stems from the awful players (typically in attitude more than performance) that have been getting pulled into the genre. While the other archetype tends to be a bit grating, the serious player tends to be the better player; however, the stereotype is that they don't deal well with another's failure. :p

Once the game felt like a job I quit, this was back in Vanilla.

Came back for BC, played till max level, then quit after PVPing for a while.
Never had the desire to go back after that.
