Pretty much every job I've ever gotten, including the 3 I've had since I graduated from college, has been through a connection.

I applied through their website and was never called/contacted. My aunt knew a higher up manager and gave him my resume and I was called. I don't know how their online system works, but I think people with less credentials than myself got a job through the online system.

I didn't search for my current job; my current employers sought me out and called me.

Most of my jobs have come through connections. However, I have used Dice, Monster and Careerbuilder in the past, though I've never posted my resume online.

I'm asking because I'm trying maximize my job search now that I'm out on the market again (sick of my current job - project mgmt).

Monster, Careerbuilder, Hotjobs... what else did you do? (or can you do?). Agencies do nothing for me since all they specialize is finance & administrative.

Indeed.com covers all of them for searching. Once you find something submit a coverletter and resume.

I wanted to work for one particular place. I searched their website directly.

Anyone else have luck applying for job directly through the website?

me. I did the exact same thing. I work for a university.

my last job however, i was going to apply through monster and a friend of a friend worked there, so she pushed my resume through for me.

What kind of job are you looking for? I'm getting sick of Project Mgmt myself.

really, that type of position seems really exciting. What do you hate about it?

It can be enormously stressful and frustrating trying to get people from different departments working together on tasks that aren't their highest priority when you have deadlines to meet.

Wow, I think you just described my job to a tee.

I used Monster.com, HotJobs.com, CareerBuilder.com, and looked at individual company websites. My current job was found using the company website, don't think it ever got listed on the 3 I mentioned first.

I now am working there.

ditto

That's fine if you know what you want (ie, I'm gonna go for Microsoft!). But how do you do that when you are looking for a xxx position, not so much what company? You don't magically know all the companies out there that are servicing your desired position.

Craigslist feels more direct and personal. I actually get calls from employers when I respond to their job posting at CL.

Craigslist initially.. got a job. Was contracted out.. after six months or so I wanted out so I began looking for a new job, but continued working. Went through a couple recruiters who didn't do much.. and then the company I was contracted out to offered a job and I took that.

All the big net job sites didn't do jack for me. No call, no lead, nada.

Good for me = college career center (my very first job out of college), CL (good job leads), and company websites. That's how I got all my job offers/leads.

I used Google to find all the related organizations in my area and went to their web pages' employment sections. Also searched Monster and Craigslist, but found nothing useful. I also interviewed for a position that I heard about through my academic adviser in college.

The company sponsored a design competition among the various project teams in a class I took in grad school. Our team won, and they put us in contact with recruiters later that year.

On a similar note, when dealing with medium and small sized companies what is the best way to determine if they are financially stable?
