After the price drop in June, the education discount, and the money back from selling the iPod Touch, it put the price around $2250 for a 17" MBP.
The specs, the size, the battery, the screen. Yeah, you're paying a premium, but that's okay. I priced out a similar Dell and it came to around $1900. The extra money is worth it for all the advantages the MBP 17" has.
As for OSX. It's wonderful. I've been a comfortable/annoyed Windows user for a long time. Once I started using Win7 I was stoked. Finally a decent OS from Microsoft. After getting to know OSX since I got my MBP it's just a deal breaker. I have my HTPC with Win7 on it which will stay, but OSX is just a much better OS for home use. Combine that with the awesome new glass touch-pad on the MBP and it's over. No comparison. I actually don't like using a mouse anymore (never thought I'd say that) unless I'm playing WoW.
Yeah it's a little expensive, but it's a solid machine with a solid OS and I'm glad I was able to make the change.
Exactly. The market isn't full of idiots. There's a reason why Apple's market shares are increasing while some other manufacturers are losing ground. The percentage of Apple users in the educational and scientific sectors is also increasing, and we're not just talking about "trendy" college students but professors, scientist and researchers compared to a decade ago.
