We won't buy things on credit if they can't get paid off by the end of the month and we're now (finally) able to have extra money for savings (not including 401k which we've been contributing for some time). We eat out infrequently and generally discuss any purchase of significance.

We use the same credit card for most purchases and share a checking account.

Awww. You two are doing a great job! You both seem understanding, not buying stuff in secret behind the other's back. Good team work!

Not eating out is a huge cost reducer! $5 for lunch x 5 days/week x 52 weeks/year = $1300 (a nice new computer). $5/meal is on the low side. At $10 per person, it jumps to $2600 or $5200 per year per couple!

Seperate checking accounts for me and my wife. So, I get my paycheck - half the bills - monthly savings = my spending money. 2 to 5 hundred a month.

Different strokes for different folks, that's just sounds strange to me but as long as it's working for you.

I make a bit more, so I always pay for hotel rooms when we travel and usually pick up the tab if we go out. But, neither of us really uses a CC nor do either of us have a problem currently with spending money. I'd say in a couple of years we'll combine stuff, but we're lazy. So, the current system seems to work for now. I make sure she's saving money each month and she makes sure I'm saving som each month.

$100 a week for me for personal pocket money.
If I am working a lot of overtime I use $150... that goes to extra lunch money.
( I sometimes work 40 hrs a week overtime )

I can always find money out of that to go out for beer with the fellas when needed.

Peace

I don't have an allowance. Self restraint works fine for me. I use maybe $65/month to purchase non-essential goods, and then another $130 for entertainment of all kinds (movies/eating out/etc). After bills and rent, I usually manage to put away about 1k/month.

I get $120 per week and this goes for gas, snacks and when we go out for a beer...

So how much do you guys get?

That's a lot of beer and snacks.

Well, I'm a single professional in mid level managment IS for a major department store. I don't have a family or a roomate or anything. I have a cat.

Really the only thing I spend money on is computer related crap and clothes (damn homosexuality...)

Um.... Let's see, I'll take my monthly income with taxes & 401k and everything taken out, then subtract for 2 car payments, $300 for gas each month, $600 for insurance (2 cars, health, home), $400 for utilities (trash, recycling, electricty, water, phones, internet, yahoo! subscriptions, napster.) $100 for catfood too (prescription cat food... I think the vet is screwing me on that.)

My house is bought and paid for (the best graduation gift you could ever get from your folks) So maybe $1000 for a week? Something like that... I don't spend much. I try to budget myself maybe $400 a month for electronics type purchases. I try to stay out of malls, because I will seriously walk out with a thousand dollars worth of clothes (I make Kenneth Cole's house payments).

I'd say I put about 4k into savings a month. My parents instilled this saving thing on me. I plan on paying for my next car (2005 Lightning?) in cash...
