Some people could give a flying fuck at the moon about computers or anything else you deem "simple" and be completely and blissfully clueless about them. Most of you have no taste in film, music, or literature. You don't see me going around telling you what buffoons you are...

Sorry, but to not know that laptops have batteries does make someone stupid.

As long as we agree that EVERYONE is stupid in some respect/no one is perfect.

One of my co-workers who's been at my company for over 5 years working in front of a computer all day as well as numerous years before this using computers stands up over his cubicle last month... and asks me... ... wait for it... how to turn on the screensaver. He was serious. I can't even make shit like this up.

Make it come up or enable it? There is a difference.

If someone never had it enabled...for 5 years.....no, they wouldn't know.

Just because someone doesn't know something you do, doesn't make them stupid. They simply have 0 interest in it or need.

Nothing wrong with that.

If everyone had the same interest/liked the same things this world would be dull and boring.

When I was in IT I always told people "there is no such a thing as a stupid question" as many would be very hesitant to ask due to IT people busting their chops.

Well I think there's a line here. Someone who does not know how to go in the registry and change a setting, fine, I don't expect most people to know that. People who suddenly forget how to go to a certain URL ("What's a browser?" lol), or how to turn on their computer? Unacceptable. The computer is a work tool and they should at least know the basics of how to use it to do their job.

Exactly. It's like a carpenter pulling out his circular saw, and thinking "WTF?! How does this work?!"

My pet peeve with people who are not computer literate is when I tell them they need more memory and they tell me it has 300GB and then having to explain the difference between hard drive storage and RAM , then realizing the person still doesn't know what I am talking about.

I find that using the "RAM is short term memory, HDD is long term memory" description usually gets the point across well enough for most such conversations.

Yeah, people justify not thinking by saying things like "That's OK, I don't know anything about computers!"

My mom doesn't know anything about cars, but knows it needs gas, oil, and air in the tires. My grandma doesn't know anything about appliances but knows it needs to be plugged in and the lightbulb needs changed if it doesn't light up anymore. My uncle doesn't know anything about heating and air conditioning, but knows he needs to change the filters, and check the fuse if it doesn't work.

Seriously, a PC is not that different, yet people treat it like a magical box that runs on voodoo.

I've dealt with MANY people like this. Heck some of our lawyers didn't even use a PC at all!!!

What is a need to YOU, does not mean it's a need to others.

The fact that a laptop (that he bought on his own) comes with a battery is not rocket science. The netbook even has a sticker on it describing the battery life!!!

there's plenty of people that cannot comprehend hooking up a cd player to a stereo - 2 fucking color-coded wires directly next to the letters "CD"

I like how someone is complaining about someone else's computer skills but can't tell the difference between a virus infection and a failed hdd.

I did not feel like wasting my time on it. It was throwing errors like a bad HDD (boot sectors, etc.), but also some "warnings" that looked suspicious. If I had the time and inclination, I would have figured it out. Unfortunately, I get paid to be a lawyer, not an IT guy (and to post on AT ;) ).

BTW, our IT guy came today and confirmed it was infected.

There is not knowing/caring about something and then there is announcing, whenever possible, proudly, loudly and with a chuckle, that you do not know/care about something.

The first one is fine. The second one should be punishable.

My uncle recently sent an e-mail to our entire family regarding a family tree he found online that included some of our family. His instructions on how to get to the tree began with:

"Search on Google.com or AOL.com for 'ancestry.com'."

When I read that, I died a little.

Throw in a universal remote (even a Harmony), and you have a recipe for disaster.

Last weekend my wife decided to delete her email account from the email client she used on one of her laptops, because she no longer wanted that laptop to receive emails.

She was pissed when deleting the email account also deleted all of her old emails and it took me a long time to get her to understand that by deleting the email account, it deleted the data file that contained all of the emails.

Luckily I was able to recover it for her, and archive the emails so she now has what she wants.

Peoples' lack of understanding of how e-mail works, even in a general sense, is shocking.

A perfect example of this is a relative by marriage who uses only his personal MacBook Pro for all his computing needs. When at home, he uses Mail to access his mail.

He called me from back East while vacationing and explained to me that he was have a hard time logging into webmail (it is our own domain). I asked if his MBP was not working? Is he at someone's house using their computer? Is he in the hotel business center? Nope - he figured he had to use the web login instead of Mail because he was not at home.

I have had the same guy call me over half a dozen times to tell me that his internet is broken. "It was working yesterday, and now I can't get to my mail." I answer the question the same way every single time. "Did you accidentally flip the wireless switch on the side of your computer again?" Its always the same answer: A bunch of swear words, and then a "you got it"

How do you even remember how to make a phone call to get support on something, but then forget that you have had this problem a handful of times in the past. And its the ONLY thing he ever calls about.
