How are people this computer ignorant?

At first retarded users are hilarious, but when you work help desk for a few years, it becomes more an annoyance. When I was working help desk it was common to spend hours on the phone with a user for a password reset, because suddenly, they forget how to login to the computer/domain or how to change their password.

My parent company's IT guy(s) love working with me because half of the time I figured the problem out before they call me back. I only call when there are serious issues and I never call for the same issue twice, ever. If only more people can appreciate this... FML.

Just so you know, it pays to be technologically retarded. You get way more hot pussies that way, versus being smart and knowing how to fix everything, in which case you'll just get friend zone right off the bat.

You just have to learn to hide your power level.

I know computer nerds who are retarded with cars. I know mechanics who can't build a deck properly, i know people who can't manage money.

everyone does stupid stuff. everyone has retard moments and everyone doesn't geek about everything to know it all inside and out.
Sounds to me he got in a hurry, didn't read the packaging...something else that everyone has done at least once with something they bought.

Agreed

Just because someone doesn't know something you do, doesn't make them stupid. They simply have 0 interest in it or need.

Nothing wrong with that.

If everyone had the same interest/liked the same things this world would be dull and boring.

When I was in IT I always told people "there is no such a thing as a stupid question" as many would be very hesitant to ask due to IT people busting their chops.

lol
My pet peeve with people who are not computer literate is when I tell them they need more memory and they tell me it has 300GB and then having to explain the difference between hard drive storage and RAM , then realizing the person still doesn't know what I am talking about.

But to brag about your ignorance of even the very basics of what is essentially mandatory knowledge in an office environment does make you stupid.

Nope

the guys is probably a Partner and has been with the firm for YEARS. He made it thru just fine.

Then you have to also understand AGE and effect it has on people's memory.

I've dealt with MANY people like this. Heck some of our lawyers didn't even use a PC at all!!!

What is a need to YOU, does not mean it's a need to others.

Why would you expect a mechanic to be able to build a Magic: The Gathering deck? Is it sad that's what came to mind when I read that first?

I started my computer career on a local repair shop, I don't think there's much someone can do stupiditywise on a computer that'll surprise me

I still chuckle remembering when I pulled some 'modified' DDR ram from a SD Ram slot. The guy had taken a hacksaw to it so it would fit 😛

I don't expect a lot but there is something to be said for knowing basic operations. There are still people out there who don't know how to turn their computer on. Sure you may not know how to change your own oil but you can at least turn the car on.

Is it sad that's what came to mind when I read that first?

Very.

Being proud about being computer illiterate is like being proud that you can't screw in a lightbulb. Why am I not surprised that this dummy is a lawyer.

I actually laid into an uncle about that. He was asking about something and says "haha.. well I'm not computer literate" and I responded "it's not funny, actually. Computers have now been around for over 20 years and you still can't use one? Do you not see what's going on with technology now? Saying you are computer illiterate in this day and age is all but admitting you're an idiot in general, and either completely detached from society, or un-able to adapt and learn".

he shut up.

but a laptop does work without a battery if plugged into an outlet! I did not know that before I tried it... thought it had to pass through the battery even if plugged in to an outlet.

lol

That has annoyed me since the early 90s and continues to annoy me to this day. I don't explain it any more, I simply don't do anything "computer" related with those types.... (My grandma is the only exception to the rule, and with her I simply don't talk about computers ... I fix hers when it's broken, but that's about it)

I like how someone is complaining about someone else's computer skills but can't tell the difference between a virus infection and a failed hdd.

Another attorney in my office, who is one of those annoying "I'm not computer literate and happy to tell you about it all the time" people,

my boss is that way. letting him have any idea that i know anything at all about computers was a major mistake. yesterday i had to watch him install the new virus scanner. standard windows software install. 'do i hit next?' 'hit next?' 'hit next?' 'do i agree?' 'hit next?' 'do i hit restart now?' and each time he'd actually wait for me to respond. it's not like we haven't done this shit before. i told one of the legal secretaries this wasn't in my job description and i'm going to start charging $75/hr to do it.

Just make sure you note it in your timesheet as "Helped Senior Management resolve a major technical challenge."

There's no excuse for that display of ignorance. That's willful stupidity that wouldn't be tolerated in any other facet of life, but is socially acceptable since it involves computers. Every other tool made requires knowledge of basic operation, and cognizant people learn them. If someone didn't know how to put gas in their car, you'd justifiably call them a fuckin' moron. Computers shouldn't be any different.

good idea

edit: god help me if he gets that iphone he's been talking about to replace his flip phone

Sorry, but to not know that laptops have batteries does make someone stupid.

Supposedly "computer literate" people piss me off more.
For example, one time I was talking with this guy about RAM, and mentioned how it all gets erased when the computer shuts off, and he said that that won't happen, if you have a good CMOS battery. xD

some people just do not care about learning technology

you can explain it to them, but they'll forget what you said minutes later

One of my co-workers who's been at my company for over 5 years working in front of a computer all day as well as numerous years before this using computers stands up over his cubicle last month... and asks me... ... wait for it... how to turn on the screensaver. He was serious. I can't even make shit like this up.
