Gee, all it took to break a government is for electorates full of spiteful morons to elect adversarial trolls who promise to tear down government. aka people like "where'd all the really young ladies go?" Gaetz.
Don't let the other Republicans off the hook - they could end this in an hour if they wanted to. All they need to do is make a deal with Democrats. This ONLY persists due to all (or essentially all) Republicans demanding that it be done without a single Democratic vote.

I can't say this isn't a bit satisfying to watch. that party is a shit show and I hope the 10-20% of republicans who are left that have any actual morals and decency left, break off from the 80% loony nuts and fascist trash.

I don't think the Dems will break history to vote for a moderate Republican speaker, nor will Repubs be willing to nominate such a person.

However, the Dems might support a vote to change House Rules to give the current pro tempore speaker the full authority of the House Speakership until the next election. Except technically I don't think the pro-temp speaker can even bring such a vote to the floor under current house rules (even kicking Nancy out of her office could and perhaps should have been ignored by Nancy as outside of the pro-temp speaker's authority).

But on the other hand, House Rules are simply whatever the majority of the House decides that they are...
Despite having a decent-sized tent, the House Democratic conference is unified and nobody will break ranks without leadership support. More to your point, we can't see a scenario where Repubs would advance somebody "moderate" enough to gain Democrat support. Kevin McCarthy is slightly left of his party; would Dems support him as a compromise selection if he was offered? If not, then it's hard to see how any GOP candidate could simultaneously pass muster with their radicalized colleagues AND garner crossover support. Boehner and Ryan both quit the Speakership long before it became impossible, and Steve Scalise decided to leave the game before it even started. Anyone moderate and sane doesn't want any part of this shit show.

I don't want to say what's impossible, but Gym Jordan still has way better odds than Hakeem Jeffries or someone palatable like Adam Kinzinger to become Speaker (yes, I had to pick a former House Rep because moderate Repubs are basically unicorns now).

Whelp, because the Dems said they were possibly ok going forward with empowered McHenry, the Republican leadership is now adamantly opposed to any such vote. And we’re back at square zero stalemate.
Their barometer for normalcy is broken. Even when 'the enemy' support an ally, you must make that ally an enemy.

Totally normal approach to winning the speakership...

"Some Jordan holdouts are refusing to meet with the speaker designee or to take his calls, sources told CNN — a sign of the uphill climb Jordan faces in winning over his opposition.

Meanwhile, one of the Republicans who voted against Jordan told members during a closed-door meeting today that they had to have a sheriff stationed at their daughter’s school because of threats this member has been getting."
(Source: CNN live updates)

Edit: Republicans going after the kids, who would have thought... oh, count is over 1100 now.

There is no such term as 'speaker designee'. The closet to anyone fitting that term would be McHenry. Ohio Boy is at most a candidate or nominee.

That's a statement I never wanted to be true. (But it is)
Here is the thing. Moscow Mitch is good at what he does, he is competent even if you don’t like his goals. Mitch typically doesn’t backslide on deals, if a deal is made he honors what he committed to.
You can make a decent deal with someone like that. You cannot make a deal with a guy like McCarthy or Gym because unless they perform what needs to be done before you are expected to do so they will fuck you and not perform what they agreed to do.

We have to be very careful in wanting to live by the words there. Remember the framers were a bunch of assholes that thought only white men should be able to own property, vote and hold public office. The words 'he' and 'him' are all throughout it.
Which is why we have the ablity to amend the constituion to make changes, as we grow as a society. But we are talking about the speaker of the house, which is laid out in the constution that the house shall chuse, and is 2nd in line for the presidency if anything was to happen to the President/vice president. It's not a possition that can just be agreed to extend authority to some temporary chump! If that is allowed, then what is stopping them from just doing the same for any other office dictated in the constitution?

Or a xenomorph bursting out of a living host?

Dammit, I tried to get a visual representation of the metaphor, but stable diffusion let me down - damn thing kept producing heroic-looking space marines with something vaguely resembling Matt Gaetz or MTG's face - really not what I was looking for at all.

That would be a viable option if the Republican's where honest. they wouldn't follow thru with any agreement they made.

Though you don't really have that ability, as the system for doing it has gotten completely broken by changes to the nature of the country.

But (and I admit this is something I've only learned during the course of this thread) declaring that the house 'shall chuse' [did those guys never learn to spell?] doesn't specify _how_ they choose, and it doesn't seem to say anything about needing 50% of the vote. So it doesn't rule out "extending authority to some temporary chump" nor to drawing straws or rolling a die or playing a quake deathmatch tournament, as all of those are a form of making a choice.

The word “chuse” is spelled correctly. It’s just a very old form of choose. Oughta inform thyself prior to critiquing.
