Wait...you're saying Trump intentionally broke the law to goad Pelosi and Democrats (who've been EXTREMELY reluctant to do anything about impeachment) into actually launching an impeachment inquiry...just to rile up his base in order to ensure electoral victory??

Impeachment is a process. The decision to investigate does not require a vote. The vote to impeach is analogous to a grand jury deciding if there is enough evidence for a trial. First we have to investigate to get that evidence, then we indict if there is enough.

I don't actually have a problem with the idea that there should be a formal House vote to open an impeachment inquiry. (Equivalent to the February 6, 1974 vote.) I think that taj was trying to say that they need to hold the actual vote on impeachment itself though. Which is just dumb.

No, they have been fully stonewalled by the Administration because they were not willing to call it a true impeachment investigation. Now they are going to actually investigate for the purpose of a impeachment, which the SCOTUS has said brushes away all national security and executive privilege rights. Basically SCOTUS has said that when congress is investigating in the role as a impeaching body nothing can be kept from them. That is what we are now doing that we have not done before.
