House got broke-into - and boy, was he stupid!

We returned from a month long vacation yesterday, to find the back door open and the house ransacked. Upon scrutiny we found that the thief had decamped with (a) the dish satellite/DVR box (b) lots of artificial jewellery in the small armouire in the bedroom.

What he did not take (but could have) : (a) my DSLRs and lenses, worth about $3000 (b) Blu-ray player sitting right above the DVR box (c) Canon HD Camcorder and P&S camera worth $1000 (d) a Nook (e) older iPhone. What a dummy!??!
(I am not even counting the 42" LCD TV or the desktop computer and the couple of LCD monitors because they'd be too conspicuous)

Not that he did not search, or did not have time : contents of every shelf in every room had been been pulled down, every small box had been emptied. I had a small fire-proof 'safe' to keep my documents - he ripped open its locking mechanism (yes, it was plastic - 🙄 ) and strewed the papers around. He took the time to dismantle the lock on the door leading to the garage, and to add insult to injury he used my own screwdrivers to do that!

The cops came over to have a look, and pointed out that he had entered thru the window in the kitchen by prying open it open somehow, and exited via the back. Now my wife is so spooked that I'll have to re-subscribe to ADT; me, I'm just happy he did not take anything I'd need to pay to replace; Dish is sending somebody today to replace the box for free.

I'm fairly certain it has to be somebody within the community; it's gated, and methinks it has to be somebody who had cased the house earlier to ensure it was vacant.

Where do you live? When is your next vacation?

LOL jokes aside it sucks for you and your wife. I used to have ADT stickers on my doors and windows and it did keep a burglar out of my house a few years ago when my BBQ was stolen from my deck.

Did you still have the ADT stickers? And for the record, leaving the house unattended for a month with no security system is not very smart. Also consider investing in timers to turn your lights on and off randomly when you're away.

All in all you got lucky it wasn't worst.

Did you tell everybody you're going on a vacation for a month in some fancy exotic location? I never tell anybody where I'm going. If I need to take time off from work or go places, I just tell people I won't be coming to work for the next couple of days, call me if there's an emergency.

People who announce to the world where they're going and for however long are fucking stupid. You're setting yourself up to get robbed. Trust no one.

Facebook Status: Going to France for a month, Woohoo!

Yeah, that's what, $50 at most?

Probably worth more than the satellite DVR.

My neighbors house got broken into a few months ago, but it's because they're idiots and left their sliding door unlatched all the time. Guy stole a laptop and a purse, while the owners were sleeping.

There was still snow on the ground so you could see where the thief walked through my backyard and tried my door also, but I always put a dowel in the track.

Neighbors response was to put motion activated lights on ever corner of their house. Here's an idea: just lock your damn doors.

Vacationing for a month?

Gated community?

Bluray player?

Thats what you get for being a 1%'er. 😡

You should put all your valuables out front for the teens who broke in so they can more easily support their bath salts habit. :colbert:

At least you know it wasn't me who robbed you. I'm Russian so I practice scorched earth. Anything I can't take with me goes up in flames.

Not sure now who is stupid the OP or the burglar. Obviously someone who knew that they were taking a month long vacation. Probably even posted in their Facebook page. 😕

Thankfully he/she didn't make off with your DSLR, Lenses, or other valuables. It still sucks having your house broken into. Not just because of the financial loss but also because your foundation of security has been shaken.

I live in a fairly small town and the houses that get broken into are usually done by either teenagers with nothing better to do or meth addicts. We've had a few people that have been shot over it as well. I really hate thieves.

Blu ray player? I would have left that also..

Ummm, why's that? The Dish box is provided free during installation, why the need to steal it? OTH, the sony player cost me $230 in March.

Sorry - I don't get it...

I have heard of break-ins where they leave behind devastation; we were luckier.

I just can't believe that he took the time to hunt for jewelery all over the house, and even to unhook the DVR, but did not think of pocketing the smaller electronics...

Well, that should me my wife happy - that theoretically she's a 1%-er!

Don't have Facebook, but I was not too cautious about my vacation plans.
