Kind of sounds like whoever it was, was looking for something specific....

Some idiot broke into my friend's place years back and besides stealing some CDs, etc., they stole his wife's Epilady.

Alarm system is cheap, i have slomins, its like .95 cent a day.. definitely worth it for me.. though my nose neighbor are always home.. they ask me about my oil delivery guy every time he shows up.. haha, yeah avg age of my neighbors are in the 60s
You are getting ripped off... by your alarm company. Or at least you will be if you have one of those "free" alarm systems and you keep them at 95 cents a day, past the end of the contract.

I'm paying $12.99 per month in Canada, but that's because I already own the alarm system.

who goes on a month long vacation and leaves their SLR camera and HD video camera at home? did this vacation not deserve to have any memories preserved?

Heh heh. The vacation was visiting family in India; and since I did not foresee anything more than a lot of group pictures and a lot of travelling, I was not willing to lug my camera bag around when the P&S camera would do fine, particularly when it has a functional video recording that works great for Youtube. Turns out I was right about that, even tho I almost lost my better equipment here!

I don't get why any thief would ignore all those other items.

In my experience, they even stole frozen pizzas.

Agreed - the very point of my post. I'm unable to understand why s/he did this, so I assumed it was somebody really dumb.

I think you have a wonderful attitude about this. You got robbed and you are sitting up there feeling high and mighty calling the thief stupid. I know it sounds like I am being sarcastic but I love your glass half full attitude. I hope next time something like that happens to me, I can walk away feeling as smug.

I just don't want to lose more than the bare minimum here : the stuff taken was trivial, but the sense of security lost is immense, so I am deliberately trying to ignore that and focusing on the thief's blunders. If an inventory is taken today, a few days after it happened, I am sitting in a far better shape of mind than the thief 🙂. The DVR he took is useless, the jewellery he grabbed (all of it) is fake. My DVR was replaced for free, and the technician also fixed my satellite dish so the reception is far sharper than before (for free), and my wife can go shopping for more fake jewellery : lots of satisfaction for her with little damage to my wallet.

Yup - don't see anything for me to cry about :whiste:!

In the state's AlarmSystemStore.com has monitoring for $8.95/month (paid annually)...they are very good and quick to respond even on alarm trouble codes (low sensor battery, loss of power, etc). I have GSM and a landline monitored so I pay double that.

My alarm costs were a couple thousand dollars, but way more comprehensive than the typical ADT style of covering just the outside doors and putting a motion sensor in a common area.

I have 40 'zones' of coverage.

Maybe he didn't know the jewellery was fake.would it be obvious to many that it wasn't real gold or diamonds?
