House got broke-into - and boy, was he stupid!

We returned from a month long vacation yesterday, to find the back door open and the house ransacked. Upon scrutiny we found that the thief had decamped with (a) the dish satellite/DVR box (b) lots of artificial jewellery in the small armouire in the bedroom.

What he did not take (but could have) : (a) my DSLRs and lenses, worth about $3000 (b) Blu-ray player sitting right above the DVR box (c) Canon HD Camcorder and P&S camera worth $1000 (d) a Nook (e) older iPhone. What a dummy!??!
(I am not even counting the 42" LCD TV or the desktop computer and the couple of LCD monitors because they'd be too conspicuous)

Not that he did not search, or did not have time : contents of every shelf in every room had been been pulled down, every small box had been emptied. I had a small fire-proof 'safe' to keep my documents - he ripped open its locking mechanism (yes, it was plastic - 🙄 ) and strewed the papers around. He took the time to dismantle the lock on the door leading to the garage, and to add insult to injury he used my own screwdrivers to do that!

The cops came over to have a look, and pointed out that he had entered thru the window in the kitchen by prying open it open somehow, and exited via the back. Now my wife is so spooked that I'll have to re-subscribe to ADT; me, I'm just happy he did not take anything I'd need to pay to replace; Dish is sending somebody today to replace the box for free.

I'm fairly certain it has to be somebody within the community; it's gated, and methinks it has to be somebody who had cased the house earlier to ensure it was vacant.

Ewww😱

Pho-phuck racist!

Vacationing for a month?

Gated community?

Bluray player?

Thats what you get for being a 1%'er. 😡

You should put all your valuables out front for the teens who broke in so they can more easily support their bath salts habit. :colbert:

wow bro, slit your wrists and call it a day.

Fortunately thieves are generally idiots. We had a huge break-in in 2009, over $40k in losses and I only got $32k for the whole thing 🙁

One of the things we thought was missing (and we'd not have been covered anyway) was about $2000 in cash ($1200 and 800 YEN) in an envelope. They found the envelope, didn't bother to open it and threw it across the room. We found it behind our armoire when we were cleaning the house up (they took 3 fire extinguishers and set them off in the house).

Sadly, I had a complete home security system that arrived the next day 🙁 I actually had just got off the phone ordering it when I got the phone call my house was broken into.

AlarmSystemStore.com is awesome to deal with.

he used my own screwdrivers to do that!

btw you should be thankful for this. The worst is when they smash shit. A friend in college had the door of his truck fucked with and the radio was stolen. The cost of fixing the door was >>>>>>>> cost of the radio. This is the reason some people simply leave the doors unlocked. Want a radio? Go for it, but don't smash the window or break the door.

Leave the house for an entire month and don't even have an alarm? I hope you also advised your insurance you would be gone that long. Normally they want to know if you will be gone for over a week. Some it's a month. If you don't and something happens you are not covered.

Either way, that totally sucks, I would be pissed. But definitely if I was gone for that long I'd make sure my alarm is in good working order and probably setup a bunch of cameras inside the house temporarily. Just string cat6 cable all over the floor and put the cameras on chairs or w/e. At least you could remotely monitor and make sure everything is fine.

I definitely realize we were lucky - nothing was damaged out of spite, or even because of hurry. If they'd broken a window (or the french door) or even that door, it'd have cost me.

Maybe he came with the agenda of stealing real gold jewelry (by racially profiling us 🙄) and ignored everything else, and mistook the artificial stuff for real. But if he took the time to unhook the DVR, he might as well have taken the BR player, or pocketed the camcorder/camcorder lying around.

This is the first break-in here, in 13 years of the community existence, so never thought much of precautions, despite the extended absence. Stupid sure, but I think he out-stupid me 😉!

wow is real gold jewelry racially profiling?

My parent's got burglarized in the 80's, my mom had a big bin of costume jewelry that she'd put her real jewels into.

Those thieves only took the real stuff. We were stepping on fake studs for a month until we cleaned everything up.

The things taken v. not taken says "I can't put this anywhere that will be noticed; I don't know how to sell expensive stolen property".

A juvenile did this: no matter how gated your community or secure, no matter how up-standing your neighbors... the likelihood is that many fucked up badly as parents and have created self-entitled hoodlums that would sooner break into your house than get a job at McDonalds.

Agreed. Jewelery is untraceable and easy to fence; while it's not common, electronics can be traced which makes them a riskier proposition. So they took what they could easily sell, and probably took your DVR to watch TV for free for a month or whatever.

who goes on a month long vacation and leaves their SLR camera and HD video camera at home? did this vacation not deserve to have any memories preserved?

I am equally confused by this topic. My only logical thought on it was the OP somehow wanted to upgrade his Dish box.

Why are lies and deception the saw you always play?

are you a deceptive liar and see it in everyone else?

You edited this and it's still hard to understand.

I don't get why any thief would ignore all those other items.

In my experience, they even stole frozen pizzas.

Thieves steal mostly just to piss you off, and they get a thrill from doing crime and not getting caught. Some are even addicted to it like it was drugs. One of my old preschool friends is now one of those people. He even broke in my parent's house when I lived there. He stole some of the most random stuff such as a jar full of change, which was actually a grade 4 art project with my name on it. WTF? lol. He got 10 bucks if he's lucky. He's been to jail countless times and always comes out resorting to the same crap.

Thieves are really a weird breed that's for sure.

I think you have a wonderful attitude about this. You got robbed and you are sitting up there feeling high and mighty calling the thief stupid. I know it sounds like I am being sarcastic but I love your glass half full attitude. I hope next time something like that happens to me, I can walk away feeling as smug.

Smug is much better than violated.

:hmm: you may be right about the story not making a lot of sense; but sometimes life just doesn't make sense, right? :hmm:

Doesn't always work. I know someone who had their window smashed to get inside the vehicle to yank the $75 stereo even though the doors were unlocked. Didn't even bother checking the doors first.

As mentioned, thieves generally are stupid.

Alarm system is cheap, i have slomins, its like .95 cent a day.. definitely worth it for me.. though my nose neighbor are always home.. they ask me about my oil delivery guy every time he shows up.. haha, yeah avg age of my neighbors are in the 60s

hahahaha yea young stupid kid who doesnt know that he stole the most useless item in the house until he tires to hook it up thinking he is going to get "free" satellite tv. bwhahahahahah

"Yo dog lookit this shit!!! me gots free HBO dog!!"

"damn dog thats dope! hook that bitch up and lets watch some Tony Soprano thuggin it!!"
