I am looking for pop-up killer software & come acorss some information. I think it is good to share with all AT folks..

All of these are 100% pure freeware, no trial periods. Some of these do more than just handle popups.

AdShield : http://www.adshield.org/
Web Washer: http://www.webwasher.com/en/products/wwash/download_license.htm
PopupStopper: http://www.panicware.com/popupstopper.html
Proxomitron (has learning curve): http://www.proxomitron.org/

Your own pc's built-in host file:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm and
http://www.smartin-designs.com/ and http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/

Words of caution: do NOT use a large host file, otherwise your PC bootup time will suffer..

Feel free to share your experience if u use one. 🙂

ENJOY 😀

btw, I am looking for a system tray icon management / organizer software.

I have essential software running on the background, thus too many icons on the lower right corner, which take up too much space.

Any recommendation ?

P.S. I know winxp has it built-in but I am using win2k. 🙁

Ewg... so many to choose from...

I can vouch for Free Surfer MK II.... just search google for that phrase. Installed it about 2 months ago and so far the count is up to 1116 popups killed. Not 100%, but probably above 95% which is more than enough for my needs.

just my two cents, try out Mozilla or Phoenix, I've had three popups in the last six months. And I'm not one of those Anti-Microsoft types, but they're both much better than IE.

phoenix is da shiznit

I use PopUpCop and it is excellent. Has stopped all unwanted popups...i HIGHLY recommend it.

Peace,

You got one of them there ads on the left stoppers? Just kidding, I?m a subscriber so I have only heard about the annoying ads here now.
Edit : not trying to start anything. There is a big thread in "forum issues" forum if you must voice a complaint.

Another vote for Mozilla. No extra programs needed. I haven't seen a popup in months. I almost forget how many there are when I have to use IE for something.

I've tried many, and the only one I like is AdShield. It doesn't live in the tray, and it pre-emptively prevents popups instead of killing them. It can even filter ad banners.

I use on called Another IE Popup Killer. It works pretty well and it is only 40k. Search for it at download.com if you are interested.

Even though Proximitron is last on your list I can vouch for it above the others. I don't know what you mean by learning curve, took me only a couple minutes reading the docs... I like how it can freeze gif animations and block ads not coming from the website your accessing.

where can you get Phoenix or Mozilla at? please advise. thanks

Go with Phoenix first. It's JUST the browser, not the whole brower/email/newsgroup suite that mozilla is right now.
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/

I should note that it's been renamed Firebird just this month... Yeah, I don't like that name either, but I've been using it for about 4 months now and it makes IE look like a pile of crap. Imagine no pop-ups EVER (with no hokey spyware-filled add-on programs), and no constant patching for security risks. There are better features, but why waster your time describing them when those 2 reasons alone are enough to switch! 🙂

I looked at the documentation for Firebird, and have a couple of questions I didn't see the answers for:

1) I have tons of IE favorites I want to import into Firebird. Is this possible?

2) I have to allow popups on a site I visit frequently. I'd like to configure a browser to allow popups there but not elsewhere as a general rule.

POW!, by AnalogX, is completely free, machine-code app. The only 'drawback' is that you have to manually select pop-ups at the get-go to kill. Combine it with a cookie slayer (I've been using AnalogX's CookieWall), and you won't have any problems. I've RARELY seen an ad for several months now.

I've tried some of the others, but they tend to screw up IE (not that it isn't screwed up in the first place 😀) or cause other, reciprical damage.

My .3 (Wife gave me a penny 😀)

i remember when stupid kazaa lite made a list of 100s of sites in my windows host file. didnt even know it edited it. stupid program. ;p

mozilla also comes with it's own popup blocker. u might wanna try that. it's definitely one of the better popup blockers i've used.
for ie, i tend to like Earthlink PopUp Blocker, but it's only for ELNK members and u must provide a username/password to use.

//krunk (^_^x)

For Earthlink's PopUp Blocker to work, you must install their Earthlink communist software - it takes over your computer!

I use, and have installed on numerous client's machines, Panicware's Pop-up Stopper, Free version. Works fine, and if I want something to pop up, I just hold the Ctrl key.
