WOW, this is awesome! I just ran a speed test and I am at 2 Mbps too!

I live in Southern WI and I pay for the 256Kbps package, this is an awesome upgrade.

I wonder if they are going to change their pricing and packages? I currently have a package with them where I pay $50 for my digital cable and only $20 for internet. I hope they don't raise my prices because I was happy with the 256 Kbps, but this 2 Mbps is really sweet.

Edit: I just checked my mail and I also got a letter from from Charter via Western Union. Apparently there will not be an increase in price...for now. The speeds will remain at 2Mbps until March of 2004, but I bet at that time they will start charging a much higher price or drop the speeds back down. If I were any of you guys that are getting the 2Mbps and are paying for the Gold or Platinum packages, I would drop down to the silver package and pay as little as you can and get the same speeds.

Forgot to mention, I am in Knoxville,TN. My speed has tripled, not bad for the cheapest package they offer.

w00t! I had not known about this but once I seen this thread I understood.

The past few days when I was downloading stuff it was going mighty fast (relative to old sh1tty charter speeds). I had 130k/sec constant off of Direct Connect. I downloaded a small program yesterday and it was 400k/sec, with one jump up to 700k/sec! I used to have the 256k/128k service for ~$35 (it was in with the cable TV bill). It was schiesty. But I definitely like this 2.0mbps, which IIRC is equal to 244k/sec. Not sure what the upload speed is, but I'm guessing 256k (the top service here used to be 1.5mbps/256k). Well actually it might still be 128k... damn. Haha harsh for all those who paid for the top service all this time though!

In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan here...

I live in Portage Wisconsin and my speeds are only at 1.1Mb and when downloading files lately it takes quite a few tries to get the download to complete!

None to my knowledge... mine still showed at 256K.

Yeah, that was my first question too, but mine hasn't really changed much. I think it's supposed to be 128 but it actually seems to be provisioned for 176kbps as I can upload at 22KBps solid all day. I wish it were AT LEAST double that.

Mine is just as slow and unstable as ever.

Never had a good connection with Charter service. My area doesn't have Docsis modems yet.

Back in '98 I benchmarked at 3mbps sustained transfers...

Then the world had to catch up and steal my bandwidth... Grr!

I had my dad check where he lives in central wisconsin. He's got 3mbps 2.8mbps and 3.2mbps in his trials, and they've got the 256k, $25 package. So there is a definite speed increase, but I'm not sure why he's breaking the 2mbps limit though.

FOR SOCAL CHARTER CUSTOMER, AS FAR AS I HAVE BEEN TOLD, ALL ACCOUNTS WILL BE UPGRADED TO 2mbps/128. ANY QUESTIONS BOUT CHARTER, LET ME KNOW( I WORK AT CHARTER).

Wow what a great representive of Charter.......?

I have been on vacation for 1 week when I left work I had heard nothing regarding this change in the Northwestern region. As soon as I get into work tommorow I will verify if indeed this is good to go everywhere.

Holy Crap! Guess it payed off to drop down to the cheapest $29.95 256k service a couple months ago. I just ran the test and I came up at 1.8mbs and Im paying the cheapest price :) Im sure it would be faster yet if I didnt have the NFL scores and SWG running at the same time as the test lol.

Actually, it sucks.

I'm on the gold package (supposedly grandfathered), and as a result of this, they've hacked my UL from almost 300 to less than 128.

1.5 DL was plenty. I'd much rather have my 256+ UL, thank you Charter!

As far as upload goes, it is still at 128 for now. No word on when it will be bumped up. Also if you lower your package I don't know if you keep the 2.0/128. Most of Socal was done a few days ago and no updates on Reno area yet. I will look into this some more and post when I know.

Supposedly EVERYONE's rate is supposed to drop (to $29.99) until March 2004. It doesn't matter what tier you are.

Won't know for sure until I get my next bill, however.

What I do know for sure is that as soon as I get any other option that offers me more than 128 up, I will jump ship ASAP. This is twice now that Charter has hosed me on speed. The reason why I've continued to pay $60+ a month for nothing but internet access (I'm a dish network subscriber, not part of their crappy cable system) is because as long as I kept it at that level, I was supposed to ALWAYS have a minimum of 256 up. What they've essentially done is rip me off for the last year, and then take the only benefit I had of sustaining that rediculous dollar amount for internet access.

Last time I checked, "grandfathered" meant you were exempt from change. I guess everywhere except Charter.

That is sooooo not true in no charter cable system is it a 256 upload speed unless, you have a buisness account. Every residential account always has been a max of 128........Either you are confused or are just trying to find a reason to gripe.......Look on your starter package or any other material sent to you from charter nowhere does it state 1.5X256kps? I think you got spoiled by a unprovisioned charter account and where getting more than you where supposed to.

BTW Just checked over in the HSD department and they know "nothing" about a upgrade to our services here in Wa, Or or Northern Cal? Sorry guys mabye the guy I talked to didnt about this it is still early. I'll nose around with some of the Corprate guys outside @ smoke break and see if their in the know.

Also in closing let me just make clear. Anything I say I dont say from a Charter Employee perspective I just call it like I see it. Im just a computer jocky like the rest of you.....So take what I say with a grain of salt eh?

cdh6, can you say anything about Parkersburg, WV? The link to broadbandreports mentioned that Charter would be eliminating the access fee for non-cable TV subscribers. Charter wants an extra $20/month from me because I don't subscribe to cable TV(I'm putting in DirecTV). There's no way I'm shelling out $55-$60/month to Charter(which is what I was quoted by a Charter rep) when a local wireless provider wants $40 for the same speed - 256k - and throws in the modem to boot.

Its a 10$ additional charge Flythunderbird and I have not heard that they will be getting rid of said charge at this time or in the near future. Since the real reason its charged is you get Basic cable service and there is no way we can tap out the line when we install hsd. If they find a way to cost effectivly tap out basic with a analog trap then they could get away with not charging the additional fee. I have mentioned this time and time again its honestly would not be that hard to do [traps are like 4$ for us in bulk.] But methinks they enjoy the extra income.
