I currently have 1.5Mbps service through Charter in Madison, WI, as does a friend. We've been hearing rumors of a 3.0Mbps service on the horizon but nobody at Charter is talking.

Anyway, today he got a letter from them (sent via Western Union - weird) saying that they're upgrading him to 2.0Mbps for free, good through March 2004. Nothing needed to be done, basically the next time you connected it would be at the faster speed. I've noticed that my speeds at home have been faster in the past few days, so it made total sense.

Then I got to work and learned that a few coworkers have 256k service with Charter and ALSO got the letter - they're now at 2.0Mbps!! I am somewhat disappointed because I'm paying my original higher price for my original faster service and now we've all got the same thing.

In any case, I'm not sure if this is a local/regional thing or if they're doing it nationwide. I will try to get a scan or pic of the letter tonight when I get home.

We've still got a long way to be a wired country like Sweden or the Koreas, but this is a start!

ASK CHARTER FOR FASTER UPLOAD SPEEDS IF YOU CONTACT THEM!!

EDIT 1: LINK

EDIT 2: It appears that Charter is not doing this in all markets.

I am on Charter and had to do diagnostics on my modem last week and it had me listed at a 2.0 Mbps connection (I am supposed to have 1.0 Mbps)- I have not received any notification letter, though.

How can I find out if this upgrade is available in my area?

Edit: Whoa, just ran DSLReports test and I'm getting 2.0 Mbit too. Nice!

The Koreas!?!?!?
Just how many megabits does Great Leader allow his people to have?
How many websites are they allowed to connect to?

Too bad they can't get something to eat instead of browsing the propaganda on www.NorthKoreaIsBest.com

I live in CA and did not get the speed boost. I just reset my cable modem (twice) and still nothing. Oh well, my download is pretty much fast enough, I wish they would upgrade our upload instead.

actually Crank,

South Korea is has the highest percentage of people who have high-speed Internet connections: between 60 and 70 percent of all households in South Korea have a broadband connection, and and there are around 15,000 cybercafes. This works out to a rate of 21.3 broadband subscribers per 100 inhabitants, whereas the US has only 6.9 broadband subscribers per 100 inhabitants. The average South Korean user spends twice as much time online than the average Internet user in the United States. Also, competition between broadband providers has led to faster connection speeds and lower costs than a lot of areas in the US. Now, as to North Korea, that's another story...

I think he was talking about the fact you said Koreas, not South Korea :p

Everyone knows Korea (South) is one of the leaders in broadband.

Yep, I noticed. I was getting like 50k/sec for the last year and about 2 weeks ago my downloads were about 150k to 250k/sec. Awesome surprise in time for Half Life 2 !

While we're bragging, I am the employer. ;-)
