What does "grandfather" status mean?

The original "Gold Package" was 384/1500. About a year or so ago, they changed it to 128/1500. "Grandfathered status" means that since I was on the original Gold Package, I was still receiving 384/1500, while newer gold accounts were only getting 128 up.

What Charter is telling me now is that if I change my package to get the cheaper price, I will lose my status of "being able" to get my 384 up, if and when they ever decide to to that. Essentially, they're resulting to extortion tactics if I want to keep my current status, IMO...IF I want to MAYBE be able to get 384 up again, WHENEVER they MIGHT get around to giving it back to me. In the meantime, I have to continue to pay $30 more per month than everyone else who isn't a "grandfathered" gold account.

Well now I can't complain as much as I have been about not getting squat from them.

I just got mine upgraded the other day. It just happened! I only pay for the 768 KBPS, and now I am at 2.7 MBPS...

It ROCKS!

About time though, at least in my area, Charter is TERRIBLE in terms of reliabilty of service.

I used to have Comcast with ZERO problems of a span of two years. We moved, and now I am stuck with Charter, but for this bandwidth, I am gonna stay!

Anyone in the DFW area notice if there "activity" light is on constantly or not recently. Mine has been steady for the last couple of weeks but I am still getting the 2MB speeds.

Not in the DFW Area but in southernMN my Received light is showing always active but no send activity and no activity on my router or any of the PCs.

No idea what it is. This has been going on for me for the past couple months.

You're probably seeing worm traffic or just standard broadcasts from the other cable modems users on your node.

We got it here in Detroit Mi. Before I bi*** too much , Yes I would at 256 upload or more, Yes thier packages/ prices are nuttier then a monkey on crack. But you know what the local telco here had my speeds on dial up limited too - 28,800. It was only 24-26 kbps actual. You sure the he** could not game on that. So I went out bought another modem, another phone line, another isp account and had to use dual modem JUST to achieve what 90% of dial up users got. I was happier then a dung beetle in a elephant pasture when we got cable. Remember the days of dial up my friends ughh what a nightmare it was. I love my cable lol 🙂

2- does charter block the use of other outgoing mail servers?

As far as I know, they do NOT allow you to run any servers.
Whether they actually enforce that by blocking ports, I don't know.

I don't know about port 80 but they used to not block port 25 (email). Recently they started blocking it causing me a hell lot of email headaches. I guess too much spam was coming out of their servers. My next project, how to stop people from using my domain to spam others. I get tons of undeliverable mail in my backup box and I'm worried my email has become a blocked address, which could be a problem when I communicate :|

Actually it is pretty decent for serving up pics of the kids for the family.

Sure if all ten people I send the email try to get it at the same time there might be a huge backlash. I use it to serve up relitively small files to hardly any people.

Comcast in Nashville has started to upgrade their system to 3.0 Mbps from 1.5. They have removed the caps on mine it was only 1.5 but has gone to the 1.8 that the connections were really at. It is supposed to happen gradually over next few months they won't advertise it until the service is 100% ready.

He thinks that they block outgoing mail to pop3 servers other than their server (which sucks)


My current provider gives me pretty much an open pipe so I think I am gonna stay put for now.

Same here. We pay for 256k and all of a sudden it went to 2mbps and we never got a letter in the mail.

Yeah, that was my first question too, but mine hasn't really changed much. I think it's supposed to be 128 but it actually seems to be provisioned for 176kbps as I can upload at 22KBps solid all day. I wish it were AT LEAST double that.

You'll also notice that your actual d/l cap is probably 2.5Mb/s....charter (at least here) is nice about increasing the cap to compensate for overhead.

I actually think its cool when someone takes their own personal time to try and help out people they don't otherwise have to because they might have a little "inside" knowledge. What do you want from the guy?
