No, it's not that big a diff. I bought both and did a side-by-side comparisson along with my old showstopper, and found that the 5xxx did have better quality, although not by much. Infact, I doubt you would even notice it, unless you sat really close to your TV (3 feet) or you have a large TV, 40"+. The 5xxx just seemed to handle fast motion better. Again this will not even be noticed by most.

I stuck with the 5xxx, as I wanted the latest and greatest, and I liked the remote a LOT better.

You'll be happier with either. The 45xx has had all the bugs ironed out, and will be a little more stable than the 5xxx, which had a rough start, but seems to be working well these days.

Concensus among those with a critical eye is that video quality of the 5xxx series is about on a par with the original (2000, 3000, Showstopper) lines, and better than the 4xxx series units. The progressive out on the 5xxx units is supposedly an insignificant improvement.

On the other hand, quality control of the 4xxx units is supposedly much better. A lot of problems with the 5xxx units.

You can buy a used/old-stock Showstopper or 2xxx/3xxx series Replay and get the best of both worlds: Good video and good quality control (plus free service). But you don't get ethernet or commercial advance.

This link comes up at the lower price but when I cut and paste TV 5040 into the search field, it gives me a page with the $299 price. I think J&R have a small web design problem, 2 pages for one product. Searching for replay will find the lower price page....

These units can be low-cost alternative to TiVo and ReplayTV unless you want to record satellite programming. The program guide doesn't cover satellite schedules so it becomes nothing more than a hard drive VCR with a built-in DVD player. You would have to manually set the unit to record the Sopranos or whatever. However, if I had cable instead of satellite I would consider it since it does include cable listings and there is no additional cost for the guide.

Actually the review of the Scenium made it sound like complete crap to me. They claimed that the TV-Guide plus would not function when the unit was attached to the output of the Time Warner digital cable box. So it doesn't appear to work well for Cable and Satellite users. The guide data only goes out a few days at a time when it does work. As a 3 year ReplayTV (and 2 week Tivo) user I can tell you that these are big flaws in any DVR that plans to make it and with a price of $500 that's crazy expensive for it's limited feature set. Much better off buying a Tivo or ReplayTV and paying for the liftetime.

When I click on hanleys's (any of his posted links) and cmv's links, I get the 299.88 price. When I search for Replay, I get the 299.88 price. When I search for TV 5040, I get the 299.88 price.

Basically, they don't want me to get this. :)

Well I have a pretty critical eye, and I found the 5xxx to have the best quality. Its processor was just better at handling fast movement, or smokey scenes. I found my showstopper to be a little better than the 45xx. But seriously, the PQ difference in all three really isn't that big of a diff. I think only a few would notice/care. If you have a big screen, go with the 5xxx.

I really wouldn't spend the money to get an old SS or 3000 on ebay, as it will cost you just as much to get one, as it would to get a 5xxx with lifetime. Considering with the 5xxx you get a warranty as well as all the new features, I think it is a no brainer.

Yes the 5xxx, including mine, had some problems when it first came out, but most of those have been ironed out, and will continue to be ironed out.

I still use my SS in the bedroom, and I still love it, but I find that the 5xxx is more respnsive. When you press a button (pause for example) it pauses on the spot, while SS will take a split second or so to do so. I just think the 5xxx is ore responsive. The one thing the SS does better is change channels. It can change the channel in 3 second, while the 5xxx takes 7. I found the 45xx to take about 6 seconds. Another thing is the SS does not have a fan and the 5xxx does. Although my fan is pretty quiet, I can't really imagine having it in my quiet bedroom. That may be a problem for some, may not be for others. Kind of depends how quiet your room is, and how close to the TV you sleep.

the deal is alive again. it's back to $118.94 at amazon

Well, it was. Now, it's back to $298.94. I guess they're playing musical prices.

I appreciate all the post to help me, but I did clear my cache and cookies when I tried the J & R site (many times, in fact).

Now showing 1-2 day availability at Amazon. Does that mean that those who have estimated delivery times in April will be bumped up? Crossing my fingers!! Price is at $299, so the deal CURRENTLY isn't available. Plus one rebate expires TODAY.

Replay has the 4504 on clearance for $129 after rebate.Replay

Any thoughts on the future of the replay? I still have an order at J&R and it looks like I need to cancel that baby ASAP, especially if people think the rebates won't be honered.

If it is of any consolation, I sent in my two sets of rebates (for two RTV5040s) in mid-February, and received BOTH sets (4 rebates totalling $200) last week. Immediately deposted all 4 checks to my back account and haven't received any call from the bank yet that they have bounced ;)

Dang it! Hard to do, but I clicked the cancel button. Sucks! I was looking forward to adding this to my network and creating a Virtual Replay to archive stuff. Well, wait and see I guess...

Maybe I should figure out how to use my TurboNet for something.

Looks like those $100 in rebates will go UNPAID !!!! (especially since they're through the lovely Phoenix AZ rebate center than invalidates stuff on a whim)

According to J&R CS, the rebates will be honored by Replay, or, failing that, by J&R for purchases made through them.
