Sounds like a very good deal. If I didn't already have my 3060 unit I would go for it. As it is $$ is a little tight now so I can't get it myself or I would.

If you want to record EVERY episode of a show this will do it for you. You can even tell it how many to save, although if a 1 hour show is on 4 times a day that's a lot of storage.

How in the world does she watch all these shows? Does she sit down on the weekend and watch 20 hrs of L&O? She would probably have to dump shows once a week in order to keep recording due to space.

when she gets home at night, TNT has nightly marathons sometimes 4 shows in a row.

If you want to video stream from one Replay to another (within your household), do they both need the service?

Sweet deal. Now I can have one for the master bedroom too.

Tough to choke down the life activation but it's worth it in the end.

They have the Linksys WET11 wireless bridge at amazon for like 100.00 or so also. Not a bad price and works great with a replayTV!

Note: If you want ANY functionality you must have the service! Sucks but that is how it is.

Oh, that kinda sux.

Anyone familiar with the DVarchive know how much you can record on a CD at medium quality? This feature may be useful only when I have a DVD burner, or can hook a harddrive up to my tv...

Recording at high quality. A 1/2 hour show, for me, takes up 1.2GB of space.

I'd be more interested in the DVarchive feature? How space intensive is video at medium quality and is it easy to use? Can it be automated? If I hadn't just bought an Xbox for my birthday....

I'm thinking don't worry about that. Just network it with your PC and create a virtual ReplayTV. That way you don't even have to crack the box!

I use both. I upgraded the HD to a WD 160GB 8MB cache model. I know have 4x the space.
Another upside to the HD upgrade, is that the unit now responds a little faster to remote control commands. Downsides for the WD route, is the increased noise fasctor. However, I hear that the Maxtor and Seagate drives are a lot more quite, due to the Fluid Drive Bearings.

I just started playing with DVArchive, and I do believe it will allow you to schedule downloads from the Replay etc. Essentially it turns your PC into a virtual ReplayTV.

Also for a quick frame of refrence. As reported by DVarchive.
1/2 Hour show at High quality 1.2GB
1 Hour show at Medium quality 1.6GB

Yes it can be, but if you only want more storage I would suggest getting the large drive and put it in your computer and run DVArchive. This way you won't void your warranty.

I understand SONICblue is still losing money on these units. Has anyone seen an agreement to provide service even if they discontinue making the devices? I would rather pay the the $250 than $10 monthly, but not if they aren't going to last 2 years.

Thats the gamble you take paying the lifetime fee, that sonicblue will go under/lose a court case and you will be out your subscription fee. So the question is do you want to bet that sonicblue will be around in 2 years....

Damn this is a great deal...but I just don't have the cash to buffer the rebates right now, and I just bought a LeadTek TV card! <sigh> Hopefully I'll find something at the end of the summer...I'd much rather have a set-top box to just sit with the rest of my components, and integrate with my computer, than the TV card. Don't ask why. :)

whoa i could not believe they lowered the price again on a hotselling item that is out of stock. I almost ordered until I looked at the stock price! Sonic Blue shares are trading at .23 Cents a share! Holy Crap! They prob are going to go under soon and need to get rid of their excess equipment. Damn I am so tempted to jump in. Best deal might be not to get the lifetime subscription and hope they unlock the boxes for free!

BTW.... If you have a linux box w/ a tv tuner card try mythtv.org and want a PVR. This thing rocks!

even if the company folds, they will just sell the monthly subscription service to another company who will not support hardware, but certainly allow you to pay $10 to download content updates.

Once you pay the lifetime fee, your ReplayTV5XXX series never contacts them again except to download software updates. The guide is provided by a separate company who only does interactive tv guides, so if SB went TU tomorrow you'd still have your RTV and it should work just fine.

Damn, at this price I might get another one.

I'm really bummed. I have a 2000 model. I paid $175 with a $100 rebate (that never came.) The subscription service was free, thus, I don't pay anything for it. I like the unit, but would have loved the options I can get with the new 4000 and 5000 series units. The issue is the cost of the subscription and the fact that they don't have a DirecTV tuner built in. These are forcing me to use Tivo.

I use the replay now, however, I can't watch one show and record another. If I get a separate feed for the unit I have to pay $5.00/month for another subscription (DirecTv charges $5.00 / unit.) Also, it sux having to run one of those IR cables over to the Sat. Receiver in order for the Replay unit to tell the receiver to change channels. Sometimes, the receiver and the Replay don't speak too well and only part of the channel makes it, thus, I get an hour of "No Signal Detected." (Well, actualy, after 60 seconds it stops recording.)

The big deal is really the HDTV recorders. They will be out this year which will obsolete these old units. I would hate to spend the $250 for the subscription (or even $10.00/month) now only to have to get a new unit at the end of the year that does HDTV. I think that the Replay folks (SonicBlue now) are smart dumping these now. This is really tempting, but I think I will wait for the HDTV versions!
