Well I could not resist any longer and ordered one. Always wanted to get one and kept missing out on past deals. Now my debate would be whether to go with the lifetime subscription...

Free Shipping

Final Price: 118.94

Well, I've looked up and down the amazon.com river, and saw nothing about a 10 off 75 coupon. Am I missing something?

And, if one rebate is only good March 9 - March 16, and Amazon is out of stock, does anyone know if they'll invoice on the date of order, or date they can ship? Might make J&R the way to go.

Thanks.

Did anybody else notice the 160 hour system was priced for $348.94 after $50 rebate?
That sounds pretty good to me.

can you network a 4500 series with a 5000 series or does it have to be the same series.

also, what is the purpose of the usb. costco has the 4508 for $250 no rebate; i thought i saw a usb port but i could be mistaken. it seems to have almost every port imaginable.

Entity-

My 5040 works fine with my ATT->Comcast Digital cable. I have to use the IRBlaster to control the cable box, and channel changing is slow. However, 90% of what I do is use the guide and just click on the show I want to watch instead of surfing.

superflysocal-

Right now you cannot network a 4XXX series and a 5XXX series, however a software update due "Any Day Now?" should address this issue. The USB port is used for wireless bridges that connect to your wireless network for streaming shows and downloading guide data.

Also, SonicBlue has announced they will be making a thin-client box that can only receive shows that you can hook up to any other tv in your house. I personally can't wait for this as I would love being able to browse my G4 running DVArchive and my RTV 5040 while on my nice big tv downstairs instead of the little bedroom tv, or better yet a 640x480 movie played on my monitor.

Damn, at this price I might get another one.

Wrong, it connects to SonicBlue everytime it gets the guide data, authenticates whether you have a lifetime or if you have paid your monthly fee, then it gives you the guide data and other updates. I used to work for Sonic Blue and one of my friends still works there (and for Replay) and I have inquired about this in the past.

The guide data is provided by another company (Zap2it.com) but ReplayTV gets it from them, formats it for the Replay guide and your Replay gets it from SonicBlue when it calls. If SB goes under, it's questionable what would happen after that when the Replay fails to connect to mothership.

That being said I was skeptical about buying mine 3 years ago for the same reason... and it still works fine :)

Not a bad deal for the 4508, as you should be able to still get one of the $50 rebates. It doesn't expire until March 31st, and it is good on the 4508, no matter where you purchase it from.

By getting the 4508 you'll be sacrificing a little picture quality, not all that noticible unless you are using a large screen tv (i.e., 36" or bigger). The 4508 will likely be a little more stable as all bugs have been mostly ironed out.

The USB port currently does nothing. You cannot use a wireless adapter with it... yet. As of right now the only thing you can do for wireless connections is to get a bridge for the Ethernet port.

I'd go with the $10/mo since it'll take just over 2 years to break even with the "lifetime" fee. Two years is a long time in internet time. Besides, by then you'll probably have upgraded to a new unit and would have to pay a new "lifetime" fee since the fees are not transferrable to other units.

Yes, but "activated" units have historically maintained their value extremely well, which means that if SonicBlue is still in business when you want to sell, then you'll probably get back most if not all of your $250 subscription investment. Just look at the prices that old Showstopper or Replay 30xx units are fetching on eb@y.

It is a bridge that plugs into the ethernet port of your replay. As of right now this is the only option for turning your Replay wireless, as the USB port is still unsupported. Check out AVSForum for recommendations on which bridges work best.

Just ordered one.

Shipping estimate: April 15, 2003 - April 29, 2003
Delivery estimate: April 21, 2003 - May 6, 2003

One rebate must be postmarked by April 16th, and the other on the 30th. This may be pushing it. I am hoping that their new shipment arrives early, otherwise I will be cancelling...

What does anyone think of the new, non-subscription RCA Scenium units at circuit city? They're $499 AR but include a DVD player, 40 hr HD and are subscription free. I'm still scared of replay going out of business and other threads say that their support is abysmal at best.

Replay would in all likelihood sell their service to someone else in the event of bankruptcy, and the indian support personnel are on their way out, so no more abysmal service. :)

RCA products, IMO, are garbage. They're easily breakable throwaways.

I'd rather buy Sonic Blue's version.

These units can be low-cost alternative to TiVo and ReplayTV unless you want to record satellite programming. The program guide doesn't cover satellite schedules so it becomes nothing more than a hard drive VCR with a built-in DVD player. You would have to manually set the unit to record the Sopranos or whatever. However, if I had cable instead of satellite I would consider it since it does include cable listings and there is no additional cost for the guide.

They're both at $298-299 for me.

I was too slow getting in on this deal. Possibly because I have the old 3000 series.

Check that J & R link again. You may need to refresh your browser, but it is $229, although out of stock for now. Must be purchased by March 16th & postmarked by April 16th for one of the $50 rebates, so better hurry.

so is the pic quality of 5xxx that much better than 45xx? i read somewhere that 5 series medium quality is about as good as 45xx high quality. anyone can confirm. if that's the case then a 40 hr 5xxx is almost equivalent to 45xx 60 or 80 hour versions.

Not to belabor the point, but yes, I did refresh it many times. I also clicked on the link to show all ReplayTV's. It was still listed at 299. Maybe it doesn't like me. :)

When I check this morning it showed 229.98 and now its back to 299.98. Looks like J&R raised their price again...
